It's unlikely that a gopher would be any kind of problem, more likely electrical malfunction. May be related to the spring thaw (which I've been told is happening in Calgary now).

More infomation about your system would help narrow down the exact cause but my guess is you have a zoned system with a control box inside your house. If this is the case, and it was only one zone that was on at the time, then it is either the valve that needs fixing or your control box has an issue.
If it is your valve, which I find more likely due to the brief cold snap we just had, the problem could be the O-ring (not likely), your pressure release valve opened(the little tiny screw type thing on the side of the big valve), or your whole valve is shot. The more I think about this, the more I think it is probably the pressure valve, which was opened not by freeze/thaw, but by some prankster kids. If your box outside isn't locked, or there was any evidence (footprints) this would be highly likely
The other option is a short causing a closed circuit in the control box, which is an easy thing to test for. Just switch the wire running to that zone outside (match the colors, or guess and check) with one that isn't alwasy on.
Anyway, if this doesn't help or youhave some more specific info as to your system (make of external components, make( AND MODEL ) of control box, type of system, rain sensor installed, age of system, installer), I may be able to help you out a bit more. And possibly walk you through troubleshooting it.

I thought the title of this thread was "Um Mr Sprinkles are screwed up...." man was I disappointed when I figured it out. I thought I was going to get to see some screwed up sprinkles.
Alas, I know nothing about sprinkler systems as I am in the stone age it seems with my yellow jiggy on the end of my hose that i have to move around my yard.
I hope it's not still on...cause your water bill might be a little high this month. Can you call the company who installed them?

I am going to mess with it later, they are off now, it might be spring that but it snowed yesterday and was plenty warm on a more then a few days before.

Where is your main plumbing for the irrigation? Inside the house? Do you have a blackflow preventer (i know thats not a word.. but) inside the house?
Why is there water to the system at this time of year?
Do you normally do the start-up yourself, or hire someone to come and do it?
It could be as simple as a valve was left open when your system was blown out last fall, and somehow water got to the system and just went off for a while.

couple question did you turn on the water already? All zones turning on or just one? Make of sprinkler system?
OK I'll add my 2 cents
your problem most likely lies in the valve. Things to check for
Solinoid (the thing where the wires are connected for lack of better explanation) make sure it is hand tight if it isn't this will cause your valve to stay open
Bleed screw - if there is a small plastic screw on the top of the valve tighten it up not all valves have this
If that hasn't solved your problem
Inside the valve there is a diaphragm it may not be "seating" correctly or it may have debris or a rip or tear in it. Open the top of the valve, after turning of f the water of course, and inspect the diaphragm
Generally the clock will not have anything to do with a valve staying open but if you want to check it out unplug the timer (no power no open valve)
