Not surprised given Sutter's history. With a playoff matchup against Nashville a very real possibility, give Vladar the back-to-back tomorrow instead of the "easier" matchup tonight.
In before the fans rage when Markstrom lets in a weak first goal.
You can't sit Markstrom straight though to the start of the Playoffs. He needs to find a groove and stay in it. Are people expecting him to sit until the playoffs start?

No, but no one goes through an 82 game season without some bumps, bruises and fatigue, including goaltenders.
I hope that Sutter gives him reasonable rest so he is 100% fresh to start the playoffs. I'd give Marky another 3 games to close out the season and finish at 63 games played.

Looking at the schedule, I think today's game makes a lot of sense for Markstrom.
We've got two more back-to-backs: today + tomorrow against Nashville, and the 28/29th against Minnesota/Winnipeg, so you figure Markstrom's getting one game out of each set. And then 3 games over 7 days in between.
If it were up to me, I'd give Markstrom the Vancouver game in the middle so he gets 3 more games with plenty of rest in between. But if you give him the other 2 instead, the rest still looks fine to me:
Today @ Chicago
2 days off
21st vs Dallas
5 days off
26th @ Nashville
2 days off
29th @ Winnipeg

My guys have been a bit of a mess, all season, and lame duck interim coach Derek King, seems torn between trotting out the youngsters and running Kane/DeBrincat into the ground. DeBrincat/Strome/Kane are the only consistent offensive threat, and can seem to generate offense out of unpromising possessions. The Flames must cover DeBrincat in the same spot that Ovi has worn out, with the Caps, bottom of the left circle. King, recently has moved Kane to Toews' wing to try to get Toews going, but, IMO, Toews is nearing the end of his career. But, last game Kubalik (having a snakebit year) was with T. Johnson and Toews.
Probable lines (to start):
DeBrincat — Strome — Kane
Kubalik — Toews — T. Johnson
Raddysh — Reichel — Lafferty
Katchouk — R. Johnson — Entwistle
de Haan — S. Jones
McCabe — Regula
C. Jones — Vlasic
(Gustafsson and Stillman look to be scratches, today, but, I'd rather see Stillman than McCabe)
Lankinen
Delia
The Blackhawk Defense has been terrible, S. Jones and McCabe are overrated. DeHaan is a pylon (the injured C. Murphy is worse). Youngsters Vlasic and Regula can be counted on for D-Zone turnovers. Gustafsson barely plays defense on his best days. C. Jones has been playing well, recently.
As 3 lines of 'Hawk forwards have been dead weight, look for a recklessly gambling defense crashing down. Your guys WILL get odd man counter attack chances.
Goaltending, I see no future for any current Blackhawk option. Lankinen will lose his net often, and spends a lot of time floundering while prone, on the ice. Bad rebounds will be spit out as he is reduced to throwing himself at pucks.
Does this mean I think it will be an easy win for your guys? No, because of the wild inconsistency of my guys' D, and the constant threat of Kane to DeBrincat to Strome with a D man crash counter rushes. The 'Hawks have had nothing to lose, and will fly the O-zone and make ridiculously wild stretch passes to try to generate O.
I have tonight off, and it looks like I will be able to get the game on ESPN+. Note on Blackhawk broadcast, our HOF PBP guy called his last game the other day, and I don't know what to expect for the new guy, Eddie Olcyzk is still the analyst so you will get a fairly balanced views from him, as he is used to doing Nationwide network calls.
Looking forward to joining you guys/gals in the GT...

In the stats comparisons for the GDT threads, it always stands out to me how pedestrian (relative to our other stats) our shooting % is. Is it a result of a Sutter strategy of having high shot volume, or have we just had bad luck?

The amount of complaints in game threads about "hitting the f in net" and or getting traffic in front of their goalie likely has something to do with that I'm guessing.

Do missed shots count toward shooting %? I always assumed it was purely goals/shots.

Let's be honest, Markstrom pretty much had a game off vs. Arizona. He needs to be sharp for the playoffs. Bingo spoke about this a while ago, but given that Calgary is such a strong possession team, Markstrom's minutes aren't as intense.
Sutter will play Markstrom in the "easy" games because those are the points we need to pick up. Markstrom gives us the best chance to ensure the win.

I think it's hilarious how many people question Sutter and the amount of times he starts Markstrom.
It's a good thing Hartley isn't coach any more as he used to say stuff like.....I'm not running a nursing home here...if they are healthy they play.....or I'm not running a bakery here but look at all the turnovers we served up last game.
I like the Sutterisms better .
Didn't know where to post this article by Francis but I felt the content was rather fitting. While Francis extols the unexpected success of our defense, players like Zadorov, Gudbranson and Kylington are highlighted as they were nice surprises, and Hanifin and Anderson were of course mentioned for being their steady and consistently productive presences on the backend, there is nary a single mention of Chris Tanev in the article. What's the old saying, you know a defenseman has had a good game if he hasn't been noticed?

But nothing has been a bigger surprise in Calgary this season than the blue line. Stats aren’t needed to back that up, but the numbers are staggering.
Defensively, they’ve anchored a team that sits second in the league in goals against. Offensively they’ve blown the roof off expectations.
