That’s an interesting wrinkle that I was unaware of. Certainly gives the player (and the team) some extra incentive to get a deal done before that happens.

That's weird.
I thought Landeskog signed an 8 year deal after free agency started last summer. I guess I am misremembering.

I asked Jane Gadreau to give me a hint on Twitter if Johnny was going to sign in Calgary.. And she liked my tweet.
That's a sign right?

I have to think they are going to ask for panarin money ( 11.6) . Not sure he gets it but won’t be surprised if johnnys cap hit starts at $11 million . I’m hoping for 10.5 million . That said if it costs panarin money to get it done then flames have no choice but to say yes. Let’s face it , no other ufa of johnnys calibre would ever sign with Calgary. Johnnys agents know it and flames management know it .

I'm confused. Dissentowner says he's signing here for sure and that Brad's just waiting for the right time. Signed, sealed and delivered essentially, no?

Don’t think that is what he said. He believes it will get done . So do I . The only difference is he thinks that Johnny will leave money on table. I don’t see any reason for him to do that. It’s not like Tkachuk will leave money on table. So why would Johnny?

Based on nothing but I get a sense that the Gaudreau's are very hands off when it comes to their son's contract negotiations. They'll like a tweet, praise the city and genuinely enjoy the time and people of Calgary but business is business and Gaudreau will sign the best deal for him at the end of the day.
Hopefully they continue to visit for the next eight years however, Johnny has turned into a legitimate star this season and his family sure seem like legitimate good people.

I keep reading the narrative that Tkachuk won’t take a hometown discount because his dad held out, was greedy, etc. But Keith played most of his career before the salary cap, and the fact that Brady agreed to a long term deal (in Ottawa of all places) at a relatively reasonable number suggests to me that it’s pretty overblown.
I think that Matthew knows (i) he’s been paid ($21M in the last three years is nothing to sniff at), (ii) he’s going to get paid (probably for the next 7-8 years), and (iii) he’s going to enjoy those 7-8 years a lot more if his team is winning (he only needs to look at last year’s team as a comparison). So when it comes to how much of the pie he’s going to take, I think that has to be a consideration.

Brady signed an 7x $8.214 deal coming off an essentially 50 point season.
I’m not sure that anyone thought he was leaving money on the table on that deal.
Although I think that deal will age well.

^^ Reads like a guy who has been through an NHL contract negotiation or two before and understands that the focus is and should be on hockey right now.
If the team does well in the playoffs, the picture becomes much clearer for all parties involved. No point in making it a distraction now when that chapter is still to be written.

Yeah I would be surprised to hear anything about either contract before the summer. I know it's down to the wire but I'm really not worried. Just enjoy the present cuz it's pretty sweet.

I can see a Team like NYR who have a bunch of UFAs throw a ton of money at Johnny.
Right now Panarin is making 7x11.64M and he has almost 20 fewer points than Gaudreau.
The guy who did the 15.6% of cap that Toews/Kane got is probably in the correct ball park that Gaudreau and Tkachuk can command $12.5M each on today's market.

Fox new deal kicks in and they already have 66 million committed , plus 3.5 in dead cap
They are probably one of the least likely teams to offer a contract unless they could dump Trouba and more

They have UFAs but one is Strome, and if they don’t extend him they need another centre in about the same pay range. And they also need to re-sign Kakko. And the next year they have Lafreniere. Plus Mika Z and Adam Fox’s big contracts kick in next year. All in all they have $11.7M or so and only 16 players under contract. Do they really want two wingers making $10M+?

Unfortunately, the Flames really do need that as the whole point of this thread.
