I just don't understand why Calgary can't do what Torino did with their new football stadium. 41,000 seater with a roof for 155MM euros.
Calgary could make a cozy 30,000 seater carbon copy and could certainly be a shared venue between Stamps and Cavalry.
PS: Edmonton should not be included in the conversation. They are a great sports town, but Commonwealth is just as bad as McMahon. It just has 15,000 extra seats (which never get filled).

Commonwealth is one of the largest sports stadiums in Canada and it's about to get a massive reno to the tune of $150M. It has already hosted many FIFA games prior to this, hence why it is absolutely necessary to include it in the convo. It is also not just a stadium, but a sports district, with the Commonwealth Recreation Centre attached to it which is an absolutely gorgeous training facility.
As much as Commonwealth is relatively outdated right now, it's still light years better than McMahon.

The only reason they hosted FIFA matches is because of it's capacity. An argument could be made that it's worse than McMahon.
Row 1 is about 18 miles from the touchline.
I agree with your premise though. Calgary's stadium (and arena) infrastructure is embarrassing. 4th largest city in a G7 country.
It's not just the stadium, but the travel in these games can be pretty brutal. When you're playing 3 games in 6 days while flying back and forth from Central America, the travel from Toronto is significantly easier. Montreal may be the only other fit in that regard, but then you're losing out on 10k fans worth of revenue.
Edmonton got lucky as BMO Field wasn't available, and Canada had two home matches in the same window, so the CSA went for more capacity and cold conditions. Hamilton got lucky as BMO Field was not playable in January.
If we're talking friendlies, I think you can make an argument to spread it out throughout the country, but then Calgary falls behind probably 8-10 cities due to the stadium situation.

Since then, both Women's World Cup 2019 in France and 2023 in Australia/New Zealand require grass also. And also because it's a tournament, they'd want uniformity. They wouldn't want some grass fields and some turf fields.

They would get a consistent surface through the use of artificial surfaces (I know you mean consistency between games, ie: having to play on grass then artificial surfaces).

You said it, injuries. Turfburns! The turf was hard and hot, it would keep in the sun's heat and get to over 50C or 60C. The field at commonwealth especially just baked. Some players said it was like walking on hot coals.

With new format, teams are only guaranteed 2 games, since it will now be groups of 3
So 1 of the 3 would likely not get a canadian game, unless they got both KO game for canadas group teams and canada advances
Well, Alberta's funding for the renos to Commenwealth have stipulations, that I don't think will really get past the CSA (especially now with Vancouver Ponting up some money for the CSA) nevermind Fifa.
If BC is back in, maybe only two venues with more games (ie knockout) games.
The grass requirement should be interesting for all those US stadiums that have built with or converted to field turf since 1994.
In 94 they had to bring grass for Giants Stadium and the Silverdome. More stadiums will need to do it this time around but there’s also a lot more money to be made for some of them.
