Appeasement and looking the other way when it's difficult to watch is exactly why Putin thought he could get away with invading Ukraine and committing genocide. He got away with Syria, he got away with Crimea, he got away with Georgia, he got away with Chechnya. The world looked away, and continued to greet Putin.
The western world was resigned that Ukraine would lose quickly and would be a humanitarian disaster and was ready to look away again.
That Ukraine did not roll over and fought for its existence (with the help of Russian incompetence) and has the possibility of winning, doesn't take away from the vast humanitarian disaster caused by Russians that they will continue if not stopped.
You cannot appease a sadistic monster. Every piece of equipment destroyed, every russian soldier killed, every jet shot from the sky, every ship sunk and every day that Kyiv doesn't only stay free but Ukraine as well, are all small steps that hasten Putin's demise. We all understand why the world cannot go to war against Russia, which is why all we can do is support.
Is it sad that people are getting killed? Definitely, but sadness doesn't prevent it from happening. Ukrainians don't have time to be sad, as they are fighting for survival.
Have you watched videos of the holocaust? I saw some of the concentration camp videos in high school, by a teacher who wanted to show us the atrocities of war and humanity, so that we never repeat the same mistakes again. Absolutely brutal videos that will be burned in your mind.
Never again, yet here we are. We saw scenes in Bucha, of what happens when no one is looking and what would have occurred across Ukraine if they had fallen. We said never again.
Those videos like Bucha also occurred in Syria, Chechnya, Georgia. This is why we must stay informed and know of the killings, the battles, the genocide, so that we stop making the same mistakes over and over.
Russians aren't being shown videos of what is occurring, and as such many are still pro-war and pro-Putin.
You have to watch (and I am not talking about gory videos), to understand, even if they make you sad when watching them as some seem to glorify war.
And Ukrainians can put whatever music they wish on their video, they are fighting for their existence, who are we to say what they should do?
War is hell, always has been, which is why we cannot look away.

I agree with everything you wrote but this troubles me. Where does it end? How much can Putin get away with, how many people can he murder before we must go to war and stop him? Where is the line?

The line is attack of a nato country. Other than that it seems he can do whatever he pleases, unfortunately.

What prevents Ukraine from joining Nato for support now?

"A Russian source is saying the Moskva has sunk and that the explosion was from a Ukrainian Neptun missile strike. Apparently, Ukraine flew a TB2 UCAV to distract the ship while it was targeted by the Neptun. The ship rolled onto its side after the strike."
Yes...that's really how the Russian flagship went down. Got distracted by a drone flying around while it got hit with missiles in its behind.
Russia's pride "Moscow" is now at the bottom of the sea, and lost it to a country without a navy. Best of all Neptune missiles are Ukrainian designed and made.
Russia propaganda: It was ammunition fire.
Beautiful work by Ukraine, knowing full well Russians would be totally fooled by a Naruto shadow clone.
This is literally shounen anime level stuff. The most incompetent army in the world.

Sorry, I know this is paywalled, however, for those who do have subscriptions, this was a very good, if disturbing, article in the Washington Post:
Quote:
RIGA, Latvia — After a month of fighting, the architects of Moscow’s war against Ukraine had to explain to Russians why Kyiv had not fallen. That’s when the most menacing rhetoric began.
On state television, a military analyst doubled down on Russia’s need to win and called for concentration camps for Ukrainians opposed to the invasion.
Two days later, the head of the defense committee in the lower house of parliament said it would take 30 to 40 years to “reeducate” Ukrainians.
And on a talk show, the editor in chief of the English-language television news network RT described Ukrainians’ determination to defend their country as “collective insanity.”
“It’s no accident we call them Nazis,” said Margarita Simonyan, who also heads the Kremlin-backed media group that operates the Sputnik and RIA Novosti news agencies. “What makes you a Nazi is your bestial nature, your bestial hatred and your bestial willingness to tear out the eyes of children on the basis of nationality.”

Ironic, as it was Russians who invaded and started this war...not to mention the ones bombing civilian targets, raping women and executing civilians... Who are the 'real' 'Nazis' here Simonyan?
