Yes, I remembered it wrong.

His production and minutes over the past 25 games under Sutter are almost identical (even less so) than they were under Peters.

Here's an article about that. He credits, Geoff Ward, Gio and Monahan for keeping him motivated. I'm happy he's stuck around:

But his motivation to keep playing might still be there.

The article gives me the sense that it was less to do with production and more to do with how he was being treated and the lack of communication from Peters (ie being benched and not being talked to). Odd way to treat a veteran.

Most people thought he said that as a spur of the moment thing, and he actually wasn't going to walk away from millions of dollars.

Honestly wouldn't be the least bit surprised if that happened.
Lucic would have to agree to it, and the Flames would too.

I doubt it would happen unless he actually could not physically play. The Flames would not play that game.

Well he admitted it during an After Hours interview last season after Peters was gone and sounded quite serious about it. I don’t think it was a spur of the moment, I think he was pretty close to packing it in for a while there.

Peters came from the school of Mike Babcock where you always have to have a notable player in your doghouse.

Not sure if it’s been discussed, but I had the thought that Tkachuk’s play this year may have actually made it more likely he signs with the Flames long term. Before the season, I don’t know if anybody thought he would play to a level to be worth 9 million next year, meaning he would accept the QO and take himself right to UFA. Now that he has likely outperformed the value of his QO offer, Tkachuk would be playing at a discount next season if he accepted it. More likely he will want to maximize his career year and sign a long term deal.

I am honestly torn when looking at the Gaudreau and Tkachuk futures. I want them to sign and want the Flames to do whatever it takes to make it happen.

Tkachuk has completely erased last season and has put himself in a spot to be one of if not the highest paid winger in the league. I am not sure I see him giving any type of discount.

Johnny is as close as he can be to testing the waters and going back east. His season has put him back in the place where teams will be offering $10-$12M per on a max deal. Really hoping the Flames push for 8 years on both but I am just not sure if they can make it happen.

Going to enjoy this ride and worry about the rest after the Flames season is over

Both Gaudreau and Tkachuk have really elevated theirs status this season, we all knew they were good players before. The price will be high but I think the Flames will be able to do it. Would be awesome if they had a signing conference for both at the same time.

You have to think this will for sure give Darryl a Jack Adams nomination.

It was a god damn embarrassment last year how so many people called out Chucky after the Muzzin incident.

A guy who lived rent free in people's head for the 1st 4 years of his career just suddenly loses it after Muzzin flips a puck at him at the end of the game???

Yeah eff no.

As opposed to your irrational and unfounded hatred of Gio?
That's not embarrassing at all?

Don’t see any reason why Tkachuk would consider entertaining that. Discount for Johnny and he probably would have signed that already if he was interested

Well what has happened since? Tkachuk's antics have gone way... Way down. He is clearly putting his focus on his game which has never been better.

My guess is that the leadership of the team knew there was an issue but they didn't know how to put it and it was a communication breakdown. Enter Darryl to make things clear:

-if you're going to be an antics guy, your team needs to be good.
-if your team is good, leave most of that stuff alone until the playoffs when every night can, should and will be a battle

The impact Darryl has had on the team's two stars who seemed lost before he got here has been incredible. He broke a couple of prize horses and this city reaps the reward for however long that is.

What's the chance the delay in signing is because of the arena deal? Ownership not being willing to lock in around $150mm for two players long term without some certainty on a new arena? Or at least showing their resolve/seriousness by letting a UFA walk, making the reason known and having the fans come unglued?
