Has anyone played any golf around NYC? A buddy and I are heading there next month, and would like to get at least one round in.

I'll need to rent clubs, as I'm heading to NYC from work meetings and won't have mine with me.

We were thinking Bethpage Yellow, mostly to check out the complex, but are worried even that course will be a little much for not great golfers. I play around a 10-11, and he's about a 20.

Bethpage is awesome and has a playable course for all levels of player. Yellow or green should be reasonable. The whole facility is cool as hell, so make sure you give yourself time to walk around and soak it all in. It does tend to be busy around the weekends, so expect high activity during that the Friday through Sunday timeframe. It was like watching an ant hill at times. Warning on Bethpage, it is a pain to get to. Give yourself lots of time to get out of and back into the city if you're in or around Manhattan.

If you are looking for something in around the city that is spectacular golf, with views of the skyline, Trump Ferry Point should be at the top of your list. Traditional links style golf in the Bronx right next to the Whitestone Bridge over the East River. Don't let the name scare you off, the golf course is a great layout that is pretty playable for all levels of play. Once you're off the course you'll have to go in and have a beverage to soak in the faux elegance. The clubhouse facilities are over the top and really obvious that someone was trying to create an image for the place that just can't be forced, yet it does.

Another course I would suggest is Pound Ridge. It is tough, but it is a beautiful slice of country club golf outside the city, similar drive to Bethpage. One of the prettiest courses I've played. It is a country club as well, and with it comes a certain air amongst the members that may be tough for some to take. Proper etiquette on and off the course must be observed at all times, which may be a little off putting for some. But the golf course is absolutely gorgeous in every way and is one you'll never forget.

I played Bethpage Black in 2016 as a 7 or 8 handicap and it was definitely a highlight. Lanny's right, getting out there was a bit of a pain. Give yourself lots of time to get out there and soak in the atmosphere. As an 11 handicap you can play any course there, the Yellow will be just fine for the 20 capper. I shot in the 80's on the Black from the middle tees.

I showed up around 6:45 am as a single and got an 8:30 am tee time, playing with another local single and a twosome - two college golfers who were on a break from school. Rented clubs, hit the range for an hour and had breakfast.

I walked the course and carried my bag in 35 degree heat, would not recommend that. But it was so much fun, every shot and hole was a great time.

El Conquistador is an interesting facility, have two 18 hole courses and a seasonal 9 hole (you're in season). Conquistador is the top course and is fun. Canada is more resort golf, so easier and more aesthetically pleasing. Pusch Ridge is a little nine hole you can take the kids out on and have some fun. My only qualm with El Conquistador is the conditions are hit and miss. If you play it when its in good shape, you'll have a blast. If conditions are spotty, it can be a bit of a nightmare.

I haven't had opportunity to play Oro Valley Country Club, but one of my favorites, that has since gone out of business and has been turned into a nature preserve, was in the proximity. Since it is a Club Corp facility it should be quite nice and well maintained. I would definitely give it a go.

Since you are a Club Corp member I might recommend that you reach out to your club pro and see if they can work out a reciprocal and try and get you on The Gallery (North or South) in Marana (just a little north and west of where you will be staying). Developed in the middle of the Saguaro National Forest it is the epitome of desert golf and one of the most stunningly beautify golf courses on this planet. Conditions are always top notch and it is a treat to play. It is extremely private and takes an act of God to get on, but worth the effort.
Thanks for all the recommendations. The trip worked out quite well.

We really enjoyed Star Pass and Sewailo. Oro Valley ended up being the best course we played and played there twice. The practice facility and conditions were among the best I've ever seen. The greens were also probably the fastest and most pure I've ever played as well. It's very walkable and much more a country club course than a resort course, which I kind of like, but still some nice elevation changes and great views of the mountains. Also nice to play in 4 hours vs the 5.5 hours at the resort courses.

I took the bigger group of teenagers to the Pusch Ridge, and you were right, it was excellent for that purpose. They had no problem giving carts to the kids and lots of duffers ahead and behind us. Spectacular views there, and the course was in ok shape. The houses that were pretty much on the fairway on a few holes were a little ridiculous. One of my nephew's hit a few shots into yards across the street from the houses backing on to the fairways!

Also had a great experience at Bourbon and Bones. I don't know that my wife and I have had too many bills over $300 before, but it was worth it for our one night out.

We golf here year round, but mostly on dormant bermuda, so it was a nice treat to get out and play some great conditions. Thanks again!

Glad you enjoyed it sir. Always available to give advice on courses to play. We're a community and should try and steer each other in the right direction to get the best bang for our buck and the richest experiences possible. Insider knowledge can be the difference between a good experience and a great experience.

Protip: Set it up and put your bag on it. Be super mindful of the pinch points. The cart will be super stiff the first time you set it up. Caddytek prides itself on the number of fingers it has crushed. It hurts. A lot. I'm not even joking. Don't be like me and most of my friends and crush your fingers.

Roll it on something flat like your driveway or the sidewalk. It will likely pull left or right. Use the included allen key to adjust the front wheel so that it rolls straight.

Anyone a member at The Winston? My wife and I are thinking of joining but are apprehensive about the ongoing clubhouse replacements issues they are having. Great course otherwise.

I am in the same boat as you. I looked into it and got their presentation but ultimately was too hesitant to commit given all the uncertainty. It will be great if they can attract enough new members to support a new clubhouse but I'm skeptical after hearing about it for close to 10 years now.

Yeah, the presentation is very informative, and to their credit, very transparent of the issues facing the club. We are leaning towards buying in, as we live close by and would hate to see the course go under, but it's a very tough decision.

After the fiasco at Bearspaw you'd have to be certifiably insane to join The Winston with impending clubhouse replacement.

There's that build quality issue that was mentioned about why Clicgear having an advantage. Caddytec is a decent product, but there are challenges that come with lower quality design and build. It's like comparing a Volkswagen to an Audi. Both are quality vehicles, but the Audi is in a different class. Some people are happy driving a Volkswagen while others prefer the benefits of spending a little more for the Audi, knowing the Audi is just the better investment and higher quality product.

I'm a member and joined this year. The course is amazing and location is tough to beat. I'm not worried about a smart plan being in place for a new or updated clubhouse. Members have already put up bond to ensure cash flow and a path forward. DM me if you have any specific questions for me.

Just because some idiots ran that club into the ground doesn’t mean another course is.

I doubt very much that the Bearspaw members would appreciate being labelled as "idiots".

But hey maybe you's guys are that much smarterer.

Man, after opening in March I was already counting how many more rounds I could get in this year with membership than last. Now we'll be lucky to have decent golf weather by the end of April, lol. Good old Calgary.
