Default Want a good job - Suggestions

Hey all....as some of you may or may not know I have just moved back to Calgary and am now trying to find a good job to settle into, dont want to settle for something junky with the job market being the way it is.

So basically I am a mid twenties guy, post secondary education in management and previous work expierence in call centers(Shaw Cable and ING insurance). I have no intrest in working in the insurance industry again...so we can throw that out the window. I am not going to be doing any kind of blue collar work....nothing against it but it just aint me and I didnt go to school to hammer drywall.(even though I could probably make more money doing that then anything else I will get....but I digress).

So anyone have any good ideas.......any great companies to work for that you know of, own, currently or prevoiusly work(ed) for?

I have had some interviews so far, and have alot more coming up this week, but nothing that gets me too excited...so I figured maybe some of my fellow CP'ers have some great ideas for me......

i'm also looking, though in a slightly different field as i have a diploma from SAIT in Computer Engineering. doesn't seem to be near the demand in IT that there is in almost every other field in this city

Depending on the number of years of experience you have in a call centre environment, and your duties during that time, maybe you can try and land a management role at a place like Telus or Bell at their call centres?

Call up medium sized (1000-2000 employees) that are Calgary based and ask to speak to the HR department. They might be able to give you an idea of what they have.

Or, get some entry level office job. Many places need a whack of people like document management (21st century filing) and I'd think you could easily grab $20/hour doing that. Once you are in, see what else is available.

If you have a chance, get into a gas/electric marketing firm. In general, the pay is excellent, the benefits are good and there's generally always a chance to move up within the companies.

I'm in the same boat as you, kipperfan...I've been home now for a month, and I've applied to MANY companies in the white-collar world, and I have generally the same work experience and education as you. I'm wasting time at my old job for now, biding my time until I get a call back, but it's damn near IMPOSSIBLE to break in with one of these companies in this city. Seriously, you have to be related or dated the boss' daughter to get a foot in the door. This city seems like it's all backscratching. One of the reasons why I didn't want to come back here, but had no choice.

Ironically, the only employer to have gotten back to me first before anybody for potential jobs is the Federal Government - the most bureaucratic institution of them all.

I was recently searching for an IT job and I'm not convinced that the job market is as scorching hot as a lot of people seem to think. I think this city is overflowing with twentysomething young professionals and its the ones with 10+ years professional experience that are really reaping the benefits now.

That said, you can get a great paying job in a good company, just be prepared to wait for the right one.

Too true. It's either you need years of experience, or take a blue-collar job. Doesn't seem to be any happy medium around Calgary.

Shoot me a PM if you're interested in a sales position with a small company. Good pay, commission, vehicle allowance, etc.

I can pass your information along to my boss.

Hey Guys and Gals....

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but having learned I won't be getting into the program I wanted at SAIT until next fall (Argg!), I too am looking for work, crazy huh?

Anyone want a washed-up actor/Petroleum Engineer-to-be?

Hahahaha....
