Ideally we can offload Lucic and buyout Monahan… I agree Sutter won’t like 2 rookies on the bottom pairing, but he’s not the GM. This was mainly a proof of concept to show that it isn’t imperative to drop both Monahan and Lucic. However, this all goes out the window if Gaudreau ends up costing 11.5M and Tkachuk at 10M, which is definitely conceivable.

Leaves us with roughly 1.5M in cap space next year, all the big guys are signed, we still have Lucic... Monahan is the only one we'd get rid of in this scenario - and maybe he gets another full year of LTIR to recover, so potentially wouldn't have to trade.

Man this team has a ton of sweetheart deals. Lindholm, Hanifin, Andersson - just ridiculous how cheap their deals are. Enjoy this team while it last folks. Unless the cap goes up to 100 mln soon It’s not going to be together much longer.
I have to question Backlund’s hit and term - maybe 1 mln/yr too high. Coleman too. We’ll lose Lucic’s hit but it won’t be enough to keep several critical players. Another season like this one and lindholm is making $9 mln too.

That's true of basically all UFA deals...

Comparable #4/5 D-men signed in the last 2 years (*2020) - ignored a bunch of older guys or 1 yr deals:
ForBort 3x3M
Hamonic 2x3M
Del Zotto 2x2M
Gudas* 3x2.5M (2020 off-season)
Scandella* 4x3.275M
B Dillon* 4x3.9M
Savard 4x3.5M
Ceci 4x3.25M (these guys closer to age 27 when signed)
Poolman 4x2.5M
Montour 3x3.5M
Reilly 3x3M
DeMelo* 4x3M
Simek* 4x2.25M
This year's UFA class (~3/4/5 guys under age 33...not sure if any of them have already extended):
Leddy
Chiarot
Manson
C Miller
Zadorov
Nutivaara
Rutta
De Haan
J Schultz
Maatta
Borowiecki
McNabb
Kulak
Merrill
Pysyk
Ian Cole
Stecher
Kukan
R Murray
Dekeyser
Megna
Gustafsson
Hutton
Perhaps a bit more supply this year (though my comparables list was more narrow). The first group are guys you're at least okay with on a middle pairing, the rest are more likely 5/6 guys (in no particular order)...I'd argue EG has played himself near the top of that list.
I think something like 3x3M or 4x2.5M are likely out there if he wants it. If he's happy here, we might be able to knock $250-500k off on those terms.

100%.
I know everyone seems to be fixated on this season, but how about that 19-20 season right after his career year? 48 points in 70 games? That’s pretty putrid for a guy lining up with the arguably best playmaker in the NHL.
What I see from Monahan today is essentially the same player as I saw in the past. He has a lot of weaknesses in his game and the pace of today’s game has only further accentuated those weaknesses.
However, even though I’ve been one of his bigger detractors throughout his career, I still think he can be salvaged. He still has that big frame and great offensive instincts. So I think if he can find himself a talented playmaker, he can resurrect his offensive game.
We saw what he could do this season on the PP, that hasn’t gone away. It still takes skill to play with skilled guys and he still has those soft hands for a big guy, so if he can find a team that’ll slot him on PP1 with a playmaker who can play with pace and get on the rush, then I’m sure he’ll start lighting the lamp again.

It’s too bad the Flames don’t have a good playmaker he could play with.
The decided that using Monny with Johnny might get Monny 20 goals and 50 points and a bubble team.
Instead they moved Tkachuk to that line and got the best line in the league that will get close to 300 points on a Stanley Cup contender.

What I saw him do on the PP this year was flip a muffin into the goalie's mid section a bunch of times. I didn't think he looked any more dangerous than say, Backlund, would have in the same spot.
Now, if you need your hip to work in order to shoot, yeah, it's not gonna be there, and maybe he will return to form next year. It would be the best case.
But I never thought Monahan looked right this year at all. The "Corpse of Sean Monahan" jokes were pretty accurate to my eye. I thought Sutter worked really hard to give Sean a meaningful role, and a role that he could fulfil. And we saw that role change through the season with Sean's progression and healing, and new injury. But you can't say there was ever a time this year where Sean was pushing Backlund out of the 2C spot.

Nope, he was trying the entire season though which is why most figured he was still injured or broken. Got to respect him for that at least.

No one questions Monny’s heart or desire. It’s his body that is letting him down.

There are definitely people who question Sean's heart and desire. People routinely call him soft and I've seen people say he shouldn't even have an A on his jersey. I think it's nonsense.

You can have heart and be soft. Monahan has always been a bit soft / non physical for a guy his size and build, I don't see how that's up for debate.
That doesn't mean he doesn't work out there, fight though injuries or want to win.

No, in that scenario we can’t resign him and sign Domi instead. Not ideal, but the team is largely intact otherwise, which I think is worth it.

Exactly. There is no need to be sanctimonious about Sean Monahan and describe him as some sort of warrior, in fact playing through so many injuries, keeping them secret, having your game completely fall apart because of it is... stupid.
Loved the players, have two of his jerseys, but he should've learned after his first summer of surgeries to tell the team and stop keeping crap to himself.

Did Monahan or the Flames say Monahan withheld information related to the state of his health and to what extent? I feel like there is a lot that happened that we don’t know about.

I have never heard someone who fights through injuries referred to as “soft” before reading this page….
Are we just choosing our own definitions for slang terms?

Yeah, not only that, Monahan’s success, in large part, is because he played in the hard to play areas. For years, he was among the NHL’s best in the slot. Not how I choose to define ‘soft’.

I don’t think he kept any injuries a secret. What we’ve heard consistently from the Flames is that his pain threshold is really high and he’ll play with injuries that shut many players down.
