[News] G Dryden McKay wins 2022 Hobey Baker Award

Per THN: For the first time since Ryan Miller won the award in 2001, a goalie has been chosen for this year's Hobey Baker after posting a record of 38-4-0, with a GAA of 1.27, SV% of .934, and 2 shutouts. His 38 wins are an NCAA Div.1 record, and he was a runner-up twice previously. In his 4 NCAA seasons, he has a .932 SV%, 26 shutouts (he had 2 consecutive 10-shutout seasons), and a record of 113-19-4, giving him one of the best college goalie careers in decades. He has won the WCHA title as a freshman in 2018-19, before winning multiple awards as the league's top Goaltender.

He's an undrafted Free Agent, and will be free to turn pro after his season with Minnesota State comes to a close-he and his team play Denver for the national title on Saturday.

He's not the prototypical goalie of today, as he's only 5'11", but he'll probably be a hot commodity.

Yup, I'm reading that Northeastern's Devon Levi (who looks a bit like Timothy Chalamet) won the Mike Richter Award as NCAA's top goalie. 1.54 GAA, .952%

Hobey baker is an award given almost exlusively to seniors and has a rich history of *not quite deserving* winners being given deference to their entire NCAA career rather than a measure of 1 season in particular, just ask Johnny circa 2013

This isn't a fluky season or even two, hometown Chicago will be all over him and others.

The other 2 nominees for the Hobey were Flyers prospect Bobby Brink (RW, 57 pts in 40 games) of the U of Denver, and LW Ben Meyers (41 pts in 34 games) of the U of Minnesota. Meyers is one to watch, as he's considered the top Free Agent available out of the NCAA this year.

Yes, I know, it just seems a bit silly imo. Either you're the best player in NCAA or you're not. If there's a better goaltender then there's a better goaltender. But there's also some other criteria like leadership, character, etc for the award.....just enough so they can hand it out to whoever they want and have an excuse for not actually giving it out to the actual top player in the country. But whatever.....it's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. He's a very good goalie who's had a very good career.

The Hobey Baker winner is selected from a list of 10 by a committee, whittled down to a final 3 by panel of various pundits, then a fan vote I think-whereas, the Mike Richter is voted on by coaches, scouts and media. I could be wrong....

If I remember correctly, the fan vote is essentially meaningless. There are something like 30 total voters on the selection committee and the fans collectively get one vote.

Slightly off topic as I don't follow NCAA hockey that closely, but wasn't Michigan with all the superstar players supposed to run through the NCAA this year? What happened to them?

They just got bounced in the semi-finals a few days ago — if they did 7-game series Michigan probably would’ve rolled right through but single game elimination in hockey? Whatcha gonna do.

His Dad Ross McKay played 1 game for the Whalers in 1991, and won the Calder Cup that year (as Kay Whitmore's backup in the AHL)...and then he seems to have also retired that year at age 27.

Ross was born in EDM, but played for the Calgary Canucks and then Wranglers.


Would be nice for Dryden if he really makes it, but it also seems plausible (given his size) that he might be a career minor-leauger who only ever get a single NHL game - I imagine there are already some father-son duos in the single NHL game club, but I wonder if there has ever been a pair of goalies?

Didnt run the numbers in a calculator but is he only facing 17-18 shots per game? Wonder how many of them are actual scoring chances, playing on a dominant team.

There's some other interesting goaltenders out there for the taking

Jaxson Stauber (son of HB winner and erstwhile NHLer Robb Stauber) out of Providence, and Brandon Bussi out of Western Michigan. Both have the prototypical size.

Dunno if there's room in the system for another 'tender. I imagine Werner may be gone next season, and Chechelev still hasn't been signed to an ELC.

Sergeev, so I've heard, is a very high potential goalie. Maybe as good or better than Wolf.
