with that in mind Valimaki (who of course definitely struggled) was paired with the other guy Sutter isn't all that trusting of- on the other hand Mackey earned the trust to play with the better guy, but also got to play with the better guy (who we know can make others look good). Valimaki and Stone were destined to struggle- could have been worse, for both them and Vladar so I'll take the outcome
Putting Mackey with Tanev was likely influenced by Mackey being a left shot. It wouldn’t have made sense to put two guys on their wrong side versus none (by having Stone dropping down to play with Valimaki).

I also think Stone’s been fine — Sutter isn’t going to gush about a player that in his mind is just doing his job. I took his comments yesterday as being happy with Mackey but less so about Valimaki without directly throwing him under the bus. The ice time speaks for itself though.

There was one year where Ovechkin was under -30 for the season.

Obviously, the Capitals were terrible that season.

I’d argue that Ovechkin was the worst player in the entire NHL that season.

Mackey is going to be some nice bottom pairing consolation when one of Zadorov/Gudbranson walks in the summer.

Seems like all other lines are more concerned with dumping the puck in, send the puck around the perimeter, try to cycle the puck in the offensive zone, or backcheck.

Mangi is still playing great though and he's able to keep pucks in the offensive zone and make plays. But holy smokes, it's like Backlund and Toffoli have hands made of stones lately. I think Sutter needs to move Coleman or Dube to second line with Backlund and Mangi.
I’m ready to try that again as soon as Jarnkrok is back in. Mangiapane-Backlund-Coleman has been the best second line combination we’ve seen this season. They’re very much built like the 3M line where Bread acts as the Tkachuk and Coleman acts as the Frolik.

Toffoli is good trigger man and he can make some slick plays from time to time, but i find his checking and cycling game underwhelming. He doesn’t have that non stop motor or heaviness that the made the 3M line successful.

As long as the team has 2 excellent lines going, the spares can just chip in from time to time and hopefully keep the GA down. That should be a good enough recipe going into the playoffs.

I would still like to see the team try:

Coleman - Backlund - Jarnkrok
Mangiapane - Dube - Toffoli

The three swedes down the centre is cool, but I think these lines might be more effective (more clearly defined roles, etc).

Yeah I agree, I’m still not sold 100% sold on Jarnkrok as a center. He played mostly wing this year. I’ve thought about the potential of a Jarnkrok-Backlund duo. Could be an interesting pairing. Darryl really should use the final stretch to try out line combinations to see what clicks.

Afterall, there’s no time in the playoffs to go and “test” things out. If you have the luxury of time, use it.

Honestly the goal against that Valimaki and Stone were on the ice for was a freak bounce. Hard to blame them for that one.

Mackey 14:47

Valimaki 14:32

So that's not it.

Don’t underestimate those extra 15s. Can make or break an nhl career. Just ask Tim Ramholt.

They got lucky and the goalie bailed them out on a few too...well mostly Vali. Stone was guilty by association last night IMO

The shift breakdown is more telling though.

Mackey: 9 / 9 / 9
Valimaki: 7 / 7 / 4

Valimaki took longer shifts overall and his last one was his longest of the game and ended in a penalty.

Yeah the 3rd period usage tells you all you need to know as to how Sutter saw things.

^^ yeah I should have been more specific. It wasn’t total TOI, but the fact that Juuso only played 2:37 in the third, and was basically benched for the last half of the period (I think someone mentioned he only played three shifts but officially it was four).

Speaking of the Sharks if the NHL found nothing in their Kane investigation why is there still no buyout penalty on their cap? How is this being swept under the rug?

No kidding.

And instead of toiling away doing sweet F all on a bottom feeder, he's putting up rather large offensive numbers on a likely playoff bound division rival.

This league really pisses me off.

NHLPA grievance hasn't been settled yet. That's where the decision has to be made.

He wouldn't even be doing that he would be in the AHL still

Then how was he able to sign with another team as a UFA? The NHL stated they found nothing in their investigation, therefore how could they allow him to sign with another team and not punishing the Sharks financially?
