Yeah absolutely no one wants to get rid of Mangiapane.

I think a good comparable to Mangiapane is Bennett who got a 4 year, $4.5 million AAV.

I'll ask people curb their expectations until after seeing what he can do when the playoffs roll around.
People must have a short memory of him winning MVP at the world's and being the player that ultimately made the difference once he showed up .
We have to keep this guy. Somehow someway.

Nobody's suggesting we just dump him for no reason. But the math says what the math says. Even if we make Monahan+Lucic disappear with no salary coming back, we'll be real hard-pressed to keep everyone that we "have to keep".

Mangiapane is a clear priority #3 and depending what Gaudreau and Tkachuk get, there might not be enough left.

Jared McCann is actually a shockingly close comparable points-wise, he got 5x5

No one is alleging that. It's just there's a false narrative going around that he will pretty much "have to go" if Johnny & Chucky are re-signed.

I’m not reading a narrative that he has to go. It’s just a credible approach to keeping top line intact, potentially selling high and recouping assets. There are other options of course. But I am also reading a few unrealistic scenarios where teams are willing to take on Monahan and Lucic salaries. Losing those entire salaries may cost more than the organization is willing to pay.

How many more first and second round picks would the club have if they trade Mangiapane and keep Lucic and Monahan vs. the reverse?

By all means if you can unload Monahan and Lucic do it...not sure how realistic that is

Lucic is moveable for a boatload of reasons discussed at length in various threads, much as I'd like to keep him around to play 50ish games.

Monahan? No way. A buyout would yield a cap hit of 2.375 though, which would help.

It's all pretty complicated though.

Lucis has a limited NTC. Only a handful of teams in the league would be interested in his high cap hit, low $ scenario. He could likely block a move to all of them.

Monahan is having major surgery. Not many guys that can't pass a physical get traded. And presumably he can't be bought out either while injured.

Wait did I miss Connor Zary discourse in here? Y'all did that without me??? How could you!

Zary will be fine. He looks outstanding right now. His production since he recovered from his injury has been exactly in line with reasonable expectations, with his last month or so significantly exceeding them. He's going to be good.

Calling him a C+ prospect is ... well, there's no other word to describe it than "preposterous."

It's a fair question to ask, but I don't think it'll cost as much to unload Lucic & Mony as people think. A team might actually take Monahan for a 7th round pick, as a low-risk transaction, hoping they can recapture something somewhat resembling the '18-'19 Moneyhands version of him, once he heals up from surgery. As for Lucic, his contract plus a 2nd round pick as a sweetener would probably get a low-budget team to take him. Looch is a true pro and a class individual; I don't think he would block the trade just to stick it to the Flames. Perhaps there's a chance he might do that, but I doubt it.

While trading Mangiapane in favor of keeping Lucic & Monahan would increase the team's futures, it would also dramatically hurt the quality of next year's team. We don't know how many more years Sutter will be here. Seems like it's time to maximize the window.

Those options would be ideal.

Monahan's full salary traded away for peanuts.
Lucic agrees to waive to go to a bottom feeder needing to meet the cap floor.
Mangiapane agrees to a reasonable contract.

I could also easily see none of these things happening.

But like I said, everything still begins with Gaudreau.

If it does become necessary to trade Mangiapane, I hope it's a hockey trade for a young, cost-controlled centre with some decent upside.

What is “low risk” about taking on an over $6M cap hit of an often injured player coming back from another major injury who was playing extremely poorly while trying to recover from his previous injury? Plus, why would any team simply do such a favour to the Flames when they know that the Flames would be desperate to move him?

Lucic would be moveable if he waives. His reason for not waiving would not be to stick it to the Flames, it would be because he simply doesn’t want to leave.

It’s low risk because it’s only one year

Just another valid reason to trade Mangiapane. He can be used as sweetner in a multi-player deal to convince other teams to accept the bitter pills of either the Monahan or Lucic cap hits.

It’s likely a waste of over $6M worth of cap space and getting nothing for it.

There is simply a better use of that space for a team with that space. Like charging a fee to the team who desperately needs that space.

I can see a team taking on Monny. But there will be a significant cost. Unless, of course, he proves himself healthy and productive.

Lucic did the team a big favor in the expansion draft. He stays if he wants.

Monahan is not tradable unless there is an idiot that wants to gamble. The NHL is full of idiots.
