If I came to that point it’s obviously time for me to be committed to a secure facility.

I'd agree - there's about 30 other teams I'd consider switching allegiance to before the Oilers if the Flames didn't work out.
My dad lives in BC, and many years ago we went to the Grey Cup in BC Place, Alouettes vs the Eskimos - he got mad that I was cheering for Montreal; he thought I should be cheering for Edmonton because they're in the West. I just stared at him like he was speaking Klingon or something - it's unthinkable.

Is the City of Calgary going to do this person a huge favor and demolish the Saddledome so the Flames are forced into the new building and signing any lease put before them? That's an awful big gamble to make, and I doubt Edwards would be bamboozled into the same play that Orthwein got suckered into by Kraft in Foxboro.

The hypothetical situation included a third party already engaged with edwards.
I disagree it’s an unreasonable gamble.
Which of the assumptions do you disagree with
The Saddledome is reaching end of life
The Saddledome can’t economically have its life extended long term
Edwards is not willing to fund an arena alone
The city will only fund one arena
The NHL will not let the team move with a viable owner and a viable building.
I could see Edwards in that scenario build a new arena out of spite but other than that you end up with the flames or the flames as a tenant.

Nope.
This mega expensive new area will need to be paid for... and it'll be an empty, mega expensive new arena if the location gets botched.

Honestly not sure where to put this but it looks like Vegas is adding yet another massive venue to the strip likely to accommodate a NBA team.
https://www.si.com/nba/2022/03/30/la...oak-view-group
3 brand new sports facilities in a 10-12 year time span for that city

boggles my mind that a group could spend $3 billion dollars on a new toy with no permanent tenant to fill 55 or so nights per year
one would have to assume that they must feel confident about getting an NBA team - would we?

It's interesting that it's Oak View as they have a real vested interest if NBA decides to expand because they'd likely expand by two teams with one of them being Seattle (they run the new arena there also).

Vegas is a different market for shows than most places, but being off the strip and with the Sphere coming it seems risky to me.

Yeah because everyone that goes to games now comes from a maximum of 10 blocks away

I can't.... arguing that the location isn't a key detail is flat out wrong.

Dino7c was responding to some yahoo who claimed that a building in a suboptimal location would be empty. As in, literally no one would go there.
If people can't make their case without exaggerating, it's usually a pretty good sign that they haven't got a case.

No tenant and competing with T-Mobile Arena which is a better location on the strip. Even if Vegas does get an NBA team couldnt they just play in T-Mobile? Or are there really that many concerts, shows etc to justify another stadium in the area?

I'm guessing it's an arms race among casino and resort operators. MGM has an arena, now somebody else feels the need to keep up. Apparently, an 18,000-seat concert venue attached to the property is a mighty big box on the amenities checklist.
