Well you aren't trading him now due to the injury. A buyout doesn't make sense.
Hopefully he trains like mad and we get another season of 18-19 Monahan. Then he walks in FA.

A lot of it was luck too. Mangiapane was not going to score at a 50 goal pace forever. Great middle six player, but he's nowhere near the 45+ goal near PPG player he was in the beginning of the season.

Mangi is absolutely a top-six forward.

Kylington and Ritchie not on the trip. Apolgies if already posted.

Ritchie is passable 4th line filler so hopefully not a major injury. OK is a much bigger problem if it's anything significant. I didn't see the injury -- anyone know what happened?

Backlund is such a polarizing guy. He's on track to have his worst offensive season in a long time, but pretty close to his career averages.
To me, we could settle the matter by simply acknowledging two things:
1. He is a 2nd line centre and would be on a lot of teams
2. But a championship quality team would likely have him slotted as the 3rd line centre

Thank you! This has been my point for the last few seasons. Backlund is a Jordan Staal in Pittsburgh, not a Sergei Fedorov in Detroit.

Part of the problem was I feel like Toffoli was added and they messed a bit with the chemistry that Mangiapane-Backlund-Coleman had.
I think in the end that:
Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk
Mangiapane-Backlund-Coleman
Dube - Jarnkrok - Toffoli
Lucic - Ruzicka - Lewis
Will probably be what this team would look like in the end. And I'd love to see Pelletier and Phillips in there somewhere too at some point.

It's a bit of a worry for me in the playoffs. Teams are going to heavily focus on shutting down the 1st line. I'm just not sure if a Backlund centered line is good enough against an elite opponent in the playoffs. It's not a slight against Backlund and more that he's a 33 year old center on the backside of his career that's never been a big scorer even in his prime. We will soon find out if it's good enough to win a cup or advance deep in the playoffs.

He might not even get 50 points...by all means I want him on the team and like the player but if he is asking for 6M or something he can pound sand unless he totally lights it up in the playoffs.

I look forward to a day when you can just post about the Flames and not about other posters. Seems you are obsessed with doing nothing else but defend the Flames to anyone that doesn't share your opinions. This site doesn't need extra policing thanks. I've been around all season thanks. I just post less because posters like you.

says the guy who just called me an apologist because I thought your take on Backlund was a bad one
site does need policing if we don't want it to end up a troll fest like every other hockey site online (you certainly aren't the worst offender but you do tend to get really active when the Flames lose a few)
maybe just maybe Backlund should get some credit for the team being one of the best defensive teams in the league. Sutter is awesome but it doesn't take away from how guys have played this season.
Guessing without looking you had them as a bottom feeder.

Though Fedorov is a #1C on every team in the NHL if he's not playing behind Yzerman ... and 99 + 66.
In his era, I'd say only Yzerman, Lemieux and Gretzky were better. Maybe Oates. But for the combo of skill, skating and defensive ability, it's Fedorov every time.
Backlund is a highly effective player whose job is defence first. He's an elite 3C who should anchor PK 1 and get some PP2 time. He'd be 3C right now if Monahan was anything more than a shadow of his former self.

The Flames braintrust seems to share that fear. The plan at the start of the season was to put together a line of Tkachuk-Lindholm-Coleman and move Gaudreau on another line to spread the wealth. Then we saw Tkachuk get put onto Backlund’s line for a few games. I wouldn’t be surprised to see that combo tried again.

I agree. He and Toffoli will finish with the same point totals. Tell me why he should be paid signifcantly more?

I think Tkachuk and Backlund have played together enough that there is still chemistry there but if Darryl is thinking about doing this I would hope he makes the changes soon to give the lines enough regular season games to sort things out.

It might be worth pointing out that this is literally Mangiapane's first full NHL season.
- He played the last 44 games as a call up in 2018-19
- He played 68 games in the first COVID-shortened season in 2019-20
- He played 56 games in the second COVID-shortened season in 2020-21
- He's now playing in his first full 82-game season in the NHL
All in all, that's a pretty messed up way for a guy to start off his NHL career. Yet, here he is... already a 30-goal scorer in what's realistically (development-wise) only his sophomore season.

he scored 30 goals, my concern is his pace in the 2nd half...if we pay him like a 30 goal scorer do we get first half Mangiapane or 2nd half Mangiapane
Going by memory he had near 20 goals before the ice was dry
