Not to mention it would undermine the whole point of having milestones, even if sad ones like the ironman.

The Flyers knew what they were getting when they signed him this past off-season. If they didn't want to deal with the streak, they could have signed any number of guys instead at $900K for one year, for example Jon Merrill.
The fact is, they didn't. They signed Yandle. And the Flyers had a 10-game losing streak earlier this season TWICE and he wasn't very good. Games still mattered for them at that time and they didn't sit him then.
At this point in the season, the games don't matter. It's a complete dick move by the coach. It's a "look at me" move by Yeo who's power tripping. No coincidence that he decides to end the streak against the Leafs of all teams on a Saturday night.
I agree with a poster who said that players around the league will remember this. You'd better believe they will.
Also, the player who replaced Yandle in the lineup, Ronnie Attard was -4 in 16 minutes of ice time. He's barely a prospect, 23 years old and that was his first NHL game.

They did deal with the streak, he broke the record.
I'm not sure signing him means he has to play forever for them. 1000 is not an important number, breaking the record was.

What about 1500 games? Why can’t he just sit on the bench a few more seasons?
If a player ever comes out and says they refused to sign with Philly because of Yandle being benched I’ll eat my hat.

It's a one-year deal, there's 12 games left in the season.

They won't, but it'll be a factor. I know for a fact that players were wary about signing in New Jersey after the way Lamoriello treated Mogilny, sending him to the minors 10 games before 1,000 (and then him getting hurt in the minors and his career ending). Mogilny himself was one of only two players who declined invitation to the 2000 Devils Cup reunion a few years back citing that as the reason.
You won't lose out on superstars in their prime or second/third contract players but veterans near the end of their career, depth help, they notice this sort of thing.

He's terrible and in no way is he owed more games to pad the streak, milestone or not. Play better, play more.

The complaints over this are pretty funny. The last I checked the NHL was the top tier of professional hockey in the world. Guys are getting paid millions of dollars to perform at the highest level. The coach has a job to do for the rest of the seaoson and into next, and its possible they already catered too much to Yandle due to this streak, and his level of play was so poor they just couldn't justify going any further with it. Its their responsibility to build a high performing team, not to cater to some disney movie narrative because it feels good.

They likely already played him when they wish they didn't have to due to the streak.
The other thing, he likely will play better with more rest.
Just like when Cal Ripken Jr. had his streak ended in MLB, they said that he simply needed more rest to be effective.
Perhaps with more rest Yandle will play betetr and even get a contract for next year.

Yandle is not a very good hockey player, but the other options they had to dress are not very good either. Why not just let him do the 1000? Their season is done.
Whether or not it's a big deal, it's still a dick move by the coach, just like it was a dick move when Babcock didn't let Modano reach 1500. I mean, the difference between 1499 and 1500 is negligible, but that doesn't make it not a dick move.

I truly believe they thought Yandle could be better with some rest. he certainly can'r be any worse.

Better for what, though? At this point in the season, you're playing for draft position. What do you accomplish if your #6 blueliner plays a little better?

Some of the logic on why he should have been left in is bizarre, especially the sentiment of he was crap before, so why now? Even if he should have been scratched before, why should that stop a decision in the present, people are required to perpetuate mistakes if they've made them?
I'm not passionate about this one way or the other tbh, I can see both sides of the argument on this one (leave him in, take him out). But from my perspective, part of an impressive Iron Man streak isn't just that you managed to stay healthy and were durable, but it's also that you deserved to be there. Being a legit NHL roster player, and managing to stay healthy for 1000 straight games are both part of the accomplishment - it's durability, and testament to consistent play. Seems like Yandle wasn't really the checking the deserves to be there box on this one, so not sure he deserved the Iron Man streak anyway.

The obsession with NHL ironman streak has never made a lot of sense to me. It's nothing more than a badge of luck and good fortune, there's no award for it, and I find it embarrassing quite frankly when for example Kessel plays one shift to keep the streak alive and then takes a private charter to see the birth of his child. I get that it's notoriety for some of these players but I hate the idea of teams playing a guy only to keep a streak going.

Yeah, it’s not like you think “warrior” when you see Kessel, and it’s not like he played some physical game.

Same with Jay Bouwmeester. It's like the person in the office that brags that they haven't missed a day of work in five years. It's impressive I guess but nobody really cares at the end of the day.

Why did the Flyers sign him in the offseason when it was already clear that he wasn't a good player anymore and hadn't been for a while?
Why did the Flyers keep putting him in the lineup throughout the season despite the fact that he was clearly not playing well?
Why did the Flyers continue to put him the lineup after he reached 966 games and broke the previous record?
If all of this is really about professionalism, and scratching a guy who is not playing well enough to warrant NHL ice time, their decisions over the past year seem to contradict their stated intentions.
Letting him get this close to 1000, only to pull the plug at the last minute, just seems like a really d### move. The Flyers gain nothing by Yeo doing this.

100%. The move was clearly to sit him after game 965 if they realized that they were in a situation where they were cornered. If I'm a Flyers fan, I'm really worried about their pro scout situation that they didn't see this as an issue when they signed him, though.

I have to disagree here. Also using a one game example as evidence of anything, come on lol.
Saying that the Flyers knew what they were getting isn't the whole truth. Yandle was still a 0.5 PPG defender with the Panthers when they bought him out and you could very well make the case that he would still be at least a PP specialist. Fletcher signed him to a league minimum deal, hardly a risk for exchange to keep his streak alive, right? You guys haven't seen how detrimental his attitude is. Him in the lineup started to backfire about after game 10 and yet he got inserted in to the lineup totally undeservingly He got his streak, of course they won't immediately stop playing him, how awkward would that be? And like I said before, fabricating another milestone him for reaching 1000 games would be doubling down on the joke that the whole ironman streak has become, mostly due to Yandle. Like would Yandle even want that? "here's a cake with one candle for reaching 1000 games, now go in your corner and celebrate alone because nobody else cares" lol. And then he never plays another game in the league again.

streaks end.
Look at Cogliano. He very well could have set the record if not for that suspension.
The league probably could have fined him, but they didn't. streak over.
sitting a guy because he no longer can play the game at an NHL level is a perfectly good reason to end a streak. He should be grateful the flyers didn't do it sooner.
Only players that will take a negative view on it are maybe a couple of old players who also want some sort of milestone.
the record is now a joke anyway. Kessel will likely break it and I wouldn't call it legitimate with his stunt.

Why the F did the Flyers played Yandle again tonight, after benching him for what, 2 games? What did that accomplish? Killing a streak that took like 12 years to build to show who's boss?
