I'm not sure either, but if it wasnt the first it was definitely in the conversation.

My God...that show is almost 20 years old now....

The first office water cooler show was Twin Peaks. You could even argue it was Dallas with the original cliffhanger in “who shot JR?” But that was more an episode rather than a whole season like twin peaks.

Lost might’ve been the first internet sleuths over-analyze every clue show. The only problem is that the writers didn’t have any answers to any of the mysteries they were building up.

I literally only know of Dallas and who shot JR thanks to the Simpsons and the who shot mr burns mystery.

Did you know who shot jr was the first show to end a season on a major cliffhanger like that? Show was a bit of a trailblazer in that sense.

Sure. Well...don't leave us in suspense...who shot JR?

Even before Lost, there was early forums and Usenet newsgroups for discussing TV shows. I recall shows like DS9, Babylon 5 and especially X-Files were popular at the time. And X-Files probably was the first Lost, unable to come to a satisfying conclusion (even after Chris Carter got multiple tries).

People have been discussing shows long before the internet. But as far as “water cooler” shows where people had to watch or else feel left out of the Monday morning convo around the water cooler is a more recent development and was not something that ever happened with DS9 or Babylon 5. Neither were popular enough and neither were mysteries. X-files was close though. It entered the cultural zeitgeist and for a while the whole aliens, smoking man etc conspiracy was pretty mainstream.

Like I said, twin peaks is almost certainly the first, imo. And I think lost carried on the same sort of buzz that x-files had at times but by the time lost came around the internet was way, way more common. Your average x-files fan didn’t have access to online communication the way lost fans did.

To my memory it was Survivor that really moved the office water cooler discussion onto the internet, but I could be wrong and I was perhaps a little too young for office water coolers at the time.

It probably has a lot to do with when you go broadband, in my house that was right around when survivor started.

I liked the first episode of Moon Knight overall, but that was some of the worst CGI I've ever seen. Star Trek in the 90's looked better than that mountain chase scene

I realize I'm the exception but I really enjoyed the last season of Lost and the finale. I thought the side-ways universe where they re-find each other was really interesting.

The term ‘water-cooler show’ obviously predates the internet. It was actually easier to talk about last night’s big show when everyone only had six channels of simulcast programs to choose from. Dallas is an obvious one, but shows like Twin Peaks, Hill Street Blues, and St Elsewhere fit the bill too.

Mini-series were huge TV events, and with the same serialized format as modern shows, were great fodder for water-cooler talk. Miniseries like Shogun and Lonesome Dive were enormously popular. The biggest was Roots, the finale of which was watched by 100 million people (at a time when the population of the U.S. was 220 million). To put that in context, 14 million Americans (pop 328 million) watched the Game of Thrones finale.

I’m looking for a website (not IMDB which has only single-episode summaries) with full-season summaries of TV series. Is there a site where I can read about a full season in one article?

The Tourist on Prime came highly recommended. Anyone watch it? It’s got the 50 shades guy in it.

No relation to the horribad Depp/Jolie movie in case anyone is wondering.
