Iron man streak is a useless streak anyways. IMO not a big deal, and if it's a distraction than better to break the streak than let it hang over the team. I don't blame Philly one bit. Do what's best for the team, not the player at this stage of the season. If it was another Modano/Babcock situation, then sure that's a low class move (still annoys me to see Modano's games played stat line). But not sure what the uproar is TBH. Yandle just isn't very good.

It would have been nice to hit 1000 but Yandle is not nhl calibre anymore. He’s one of the worst dmen in the league. This should have happened a while ago. Can hardly blame Yeo. This isn’t happening out of spite to end the streak. If anything, he stayed in the lineup so long purely because of the streak.

Yandle’s Ironman streak was at threat in Florida too. Is Kessel next on the list?

All their younger players seemingly regressed -- Konecny, Lindblom, frost, provorov. Their overpaid players are still overpaid -- Hayes, JVR, and now Ristolainen. Injuries destroyed them this year -- couturier, Ellis, Hayes, and sometimes Farabee.
But if you check the title, this thread is about Yandle's streak.
They tried for a long time to do right by him, but this move is a long time coming.

Kessel has 42 points in 68 games on a bad Arizona team this season, still at a 0.6 ppg pace. I think if he can sign a long-term cap-friendly contract (like 3-mil average cap hit), he can probably play another 4-5 seasons no problem.

I hate when coaches do this. The whole point of an Ironman streak is that a player can tough it out through an entire game... not skate a circle on the ice and then run back to the bench at the first sign of having to get involved in the play.
Ironman streaks should only count if the player plays a meaningful part of the entire game... like 2 shifts in every period or at least 5 minutes TOI or something.

I haven't watched Yandle a lot, but when I have watched him (almost exclusively when the Flames played against him), he looked like one of those players that is really good at a couple of things, but his overall game was not great. If the iron streak is more a product of avoiding physical play, the achievement isn't something to be proud of. Is that the case here?

They are better off losing now anyway...players around the league wont like this... doesn't matter if it's warranted or not. Any gain from scratching him will be overshadowed by the perception players around the league will have of this coach/organization. IMO
If they had played a meaningful game in 5 months it might be different

If the Flyers were still competing for a playoff spot, I would agree with this 100%. But they're competing for the highest possible draft pick. Just keep him in the lineup and let him get 1000. He was only 11 games away...

Iron Man streaks should be a part luck and mostly accomplishment. The NHL should be a hard league to play in. If you're a trash tier player just riding out to the sunset, you shouldn't be playing. Give the spot to someone more deserving.
edit: he only got that close to 1000, because he has the streak, not for performance.

They should have traded him to Edmonton. I bet you the Oilers would have kept him in for 1000+
Edmonton media loves those personal titles.

Yeo the same clown who wanted to sit Bouwmeester before they fired him in St.Louis to go on to win the cup.

Honestly, I don't really see the difference between 989 and 1000. I think it's important for the Flyers culture to not play a player just for his personal accomplishment. That sends a terrible message to your developing players.
I also remember Iron Mike scratching Sarich, and his reasoning was something along the lines of: At some point the player starts caring more about his streak, so he starts playing in a way so that he doesn't get injured. If Yandle plays in a way just so he can prolong the streak, and sucks while doing it... then why would other players take a hit to make a play, or risk injuries for meaningless wins.

1000 would be a pretty cool milestone to hit, but eventually you have to quit handing over games given how poor he has played. Its still a professional league
