I also liked it, I liked the David Lynch Dune as well, but largely as a comedy

I read Dune a bunch of times when I was young, so it’s hard to put myself in the shoes of someone coming in cold. But take my word that there’s a lot more story in the book. There’s all sorts of intrigue around the colonization of Arrakis and relationship between Leto and the Fremen, there’s a cat-and-mouse espionage war between the Atreides Mentat Thufir and his opposite number with the Harkonnen, characters like Thufir and Dr Yueh get their own backstories and scenes, the conflict between Jessica and the Bene Gesserit is fleshed out. It’s more Game of Thrones than Bladerunner 2049.
The film looks great, but it was an odd choice to adapt such a dramatically-dense book into such a… stately paced film.

I was with you in this argument until the bolded. Movies are a visual medium so the look of it is relevant.
I guess only non thinkers go to art galleries.

Dune was great and I watched it multiple times in theatres and on TV... Just to dilute the silliness from the people who are complaining about it. It's still Villeneuve's third best piece of science fiction, for me, but it was very well done and a true spectacle of filmmaking. I'm not sure if having read the book made it better or worse, though.
The idea that it's a movie for "non-thinkers" is a hilariously dumb take.

another good one for noobs is "Bride and Prejudice"
A fun movie in mostly English that would be a good transition point to a real Bollywood movie.

Haha, wait a second. The Dune director also directed that new boring ####ty Blade Runner? Figures. Both god-awful movies.
I did like Arrival, though.

It's a really really stupid story

The extended universe explains it a bit. There used to be high technology but they went to a completely computer free existence after an AI tried to wipe out humanity. So essentially Spice was a way for human navigated space flight and not AI navigated. That is my understand anyways.

Villenueve has incredible range imo.
you should watch Sicario, Prisoners or Incendies.
I loved Dune, but it's not for everyone...They did have to edit out a lot of the political machinations... i am still hopeful for an extended cut as there are definitely a number of deleted scenes

Flip the first two.
Sliver if you didn't like BR2049 I honestly just feel bad for you for missing out in that enjoyment. I think it's one of the best Sci fi movies ever made. I think Arrival might be THE best one ever made.

It's been decades since I read it but I distinctly recall even as a 17 year old fan boy wondering what the **** do the worms eat, sand? what do the freemen eat as well, the bloody mice things, druzel's, how many druzel's does it take to fill you up, hundreds?

The whole "non-thinkers" thing is just low trolling. "haha What-a-minute, that sucked too!" like troll 101 playbook. No creativity whatsoever.

Arrival was good. Certainly no Interstellar, but it would make my top 25 sci-fi movies, if not higher.
I didn't like the original Blade Runner, either. Like, I fataing hated it, in fact. BR2049 being that good, though? IDK, maybe one day when we're old and retired we'll get together and watch that one and you can explain to me what I'm missing. There must be a style of sci-fi (Dune, BR2049, etc.) that I am just not appreciating and I don't know why. Both of those movies (and Mad Max) I was actually angry sitting in the theater feeling like the movie was actively stealing minutes away from my life. So it's not like I just didn't like them...I actually hated them to the point where they ruined my day. Yet you and some other people love them. I can't reconcile that.
Hey here's a question since you like sci-fi (that's my favourite movie genre, too)...what did you think of Ad Astra? I liked it and it was a really slow burn, so it's not like I'm not capable of taking in a slow-moving movie. My wife thought it was really boring, as did most people I've talked to about it.

Guy, it's an exaggeration for fun. You don't need to worry there's a troll in your midst just trying to ruin the forum by being disingenuous.

I doubt I'll be able to explain it to you in a way that you'd find convincing, if you hated it that much. Like I say I just think that's a shame you aren't getting out of it what other people seem to. One of the main things that Villeneuve does is create atmosphere, and once that's established he can create tension for the viewer, but if that just isn't working on your particular brain software, I'm not sure there's anything to be done about that. I mean, can you watch the border crossing scene in Sicario without feeling the hair on the back of your neck stand up?

I haven't seen it. I was going to but the buzz was that it wasn't great. I always have a list of movies I need to watch and the list always seems to grow longer rather than shorter but I'll add it and let you know.
I'm not sure where I'd put Interstellar. I thought it was something that everyone who likes movies should see, but I don't know about top 25. Then again, I've never attempted to put together a top 25 films list in any genre.

Yeah, I would be curious about your thoughts on Ad Astra if you ever get around to it.
I guess I feel sorry for myself that I can't see what others are seeing in Dune and Bladerunner. My own fataing brother calls Bladerunner a "film" since it's superior to just a "movie," so, I mean, it's not like it has escaped my attention that some people connect with that movie in a way I can't seem to access.

I didnt much like Bladerunner 2049, thought it was really a bit of a pointless retelling of the original which I utterly loved, if the first movie hadnt of existed I probably would have liked the second
