Same here. I generally watch a ton of movies and I like to think I have my ear to the ground when it comes to this stuff, but I've only seen 4 of this year's best picture noms. I guess I'm gonna have to check out CODA at least just to see what all the fuss is about. Before the nominess were announced, I'd never even heard of that movie.
The problem with all these different streaming platforms is that there's so much content now (including movies released in theatres), it's almost impossible to find the time to watch everything. Same goes for TV shows.

This is 100% right. Unless you want all your free time consumed by watching movies and TV shows, very hard to watch everything that sounds interesting. There is so much content.

I think a large part of the decline in the Oscars is that the movie industry has gone full blockbuster with Marvel, DC, Star Wars, etc and the masses just aren't watching the type of films that the Academy seeks to reward. Throw in streaming TV series and there just isn't enough time in the year for the average person to watch all the popular movies and shows and make time for Oscar fare which is more obscure artsy movies that typically fall through the cracks.
I don't know what the solution is because I don't want to live in a world where Chris Evans is winning an Oscar for best actor portraying Captain America but at the same time it's tough to watch awards being given out for movies and performances you haven't seen. I just think that this is all part of the shift in entertainment where movie theatres are being replaced by home streaming as the Academy Awards is old Holywood that either will adapt or become increasingly more marginalized.

I wonder what the future of movies looks like. The writing and acting talent working on TV series has probably surpassed movies now. We have a nice theater in town that I enjoy going to from time to time, but watching a movie at home is becoming more and more of a rarity. The storytelling and character development in say a 10 episode HBO series is generally a more satisfying experience than most feature length movies, and also I'm so tired of comic book movies which seem to dominate the big budget space.

I have thought for a while that movie theatres should be showing major TV shows. New season of The Boys about to come out? You can watch Episode 1 at our theatre a week early. HBO finds another hit like Game of Thrones? We screen one episode each week on Friday and Saturday nights.
I'd actually like to go to my local theatre and watch something but every time I look they're showing things I've already seen and things I don't care about. Do I want to watch The Lost City? No... not really.

I suppose it will come down to how much people will want to pay to watch a TV show in a theater that is streaming on a paid service at home already. Game of Thrones may be able to pull that off because it's a LOTR type of spectacle but will people want to see Better Call Saul on the big screen?

I agree hat CODA wasn't really an Oscar worthy movie. Though I wasn't really a fan of Licorice Pizza either. Beautifully shot and acted but the story did nothing for me.
I would have liked to see Dune take Best Picture. It was stunning in every way.

If the performances are good enough, why not? No one bats (sorry) an eye at Heath Ledger winning as the Joker.
Josh Brolin and RDJ in Infinity War, Hugh Jackman in Logan would have all been worthy nominations IMO. This list goes on.

Agreed. The Oscars used to rely on the overlap of artistically deserving films and commercially successful films. Lawrence of Arabia, In the Heat of the Night, the Godfather, Chariots of Fire, Platoon, Unforgiven, Schindlers List, A Beautiful Mind. Those sorts of films arent being made anymore, and the overlap between artistic merit and mainstream popularity has pretty much vanished.

I keep track of the movies that I watch on Letterboxd, and going back the best movie for me was Psycho Goreman. It was more enjoyable and layered than any 'top' movies of the last couple of years. I don't mind touchy feely tear jerkers, but everything has become so unrelentingly boring, with so many heavyhanded messages, that I just can't be bothered at this point.
I usually watch the best actor and best actress (as well as supporting) movies, because I always like to see a great performance elevate a movie, but this year I probably would have passed on King Richard even before the Smith controversy. I don't care about the Williams sisters, and I can see a bunch of scenes where I'm supposed to be 'moved' that are just not going to land with me because I don't have the prerequisite adoration.
That and I have to either get Apple or illegally download the best picture because it's on one streamer? I might skip the whole year.

The decline in the Oscars is because we have a billion different viewing options now. Grammy, Emmy, Oscar, all dropping.

Film is also a creatively rigid and exhausted platform for entertainment. There's only 7 types of stories you can do and they've all been done thousands of times. Most of the movies I watch are usually for someone else and if it were up to me, I'd probably watch 5 movies in a year.

CODA's win might also have to do with the increase in nominees splitting the votes for the others. It might not have been more voters #1 pick but rather the received the most #2s.

I'll give you Ledger as he was deserving but Brolin and Jackman for those roles? Nah. Not even close. It's a very short list of superhero performances that have been oscar worthy and to be fair those movies are not written with Oscar performances in mind. A lot of the Oscar winning roles are from movies that were taylor-made with the Oscars in mind.

I was able to see all movies nominated for Best Picture this year and rooted for CODA. It was by far the best story, it was kind, unpretentious and very believable. To be fair, none of the nominated movies were outstanding; but CODA was better than every other one.
To EE's point, when something like Dune or Westside Story get nominated I just don't know what to say anymore. Either the Academy nominating committee have lost their minds, or they have nothing better to nominate, which is even sadder, or it is all corrupted and lobbied, which is disgusting.

Jackman for Logan? I'd be on board with that. That was an amazing performance.

Logan was released in 2017, which means it would have been the 2018 best actor it would need to supplant, which was Gary Oldman in Darkest Hour.
... Yeah, no, sorry Hugh Jackman, but no.
