I don't want to take anything away from what Davies has done for this program, but IMO, the turn started a bit earlier, and Sunday was a very symbolic moment.
Junior Hoilett was sought after by Canada for years, always refusing to comment on his plans. He was eligible for Jamaica, who at the time was arguably a more promising side to get a shot at a World Cup. He held out until he was 25, and 2015, and finally joined. Akindele did commit just before him, but his profile was lower. Cavalry's own Fraser Aird entered the fold around this time as well.
This is when it seemed like the dominos started to fall a little bit. We had teams that could actually score a goal or two, and showed some brief bright spots, although still languishing for another 6 years.
Hoilett gave the team that shred of credibility, and there he was, crying on the field against the team he turned down, qualifying in what may be his last cycle.

Yes, but there are restrictions about how many countries from the same region can be in a group. So Canada won't be able to be in a group with USA or Mexico. Not sure that applies to the inter-continental playoff qualifiers but I'd guess not so Costa Rica may be a possibility if we make pot 3.

Yes, one team from each pot in each group and teams from the same confederation can't be in the same group except Europe who can have 2.
This is from 2018. Same procedure. Just replace Russia with Qatar

LOL non-Canada related but Algeria and Cameroon went to extra time. Algeria scored with 2 minutes left and starting rolling around on the ground for 5 minutes. Then Cameroon scored to win on away goals and Algeria had no time left to equalize because they had wasted it all.

Can someone explain to a pedestrian fan such as myself why we want Pot 3 over 4?
Thanks in advance.

The stronger teams are in a higher pot, and the groups are formed by drawing one team from each pot.
So if Canada is in Pot 3, they may get a weaker opponent from Pot 4 to be drawn in the same group.
If they are in Pot 4, then you may potentially get 3 strong teams in the same group

Because each group has a team from each pot (1 through 4)
If Canada is in Pot 3, then there is also a team from Pot 4 in their group, making the group easier

Imagine getting in as a Pot 3 team, then getting in Group A - we'd be the 2nd highest ranking team in the group!
Dare to dream, Arnold. Dare to dream!

Each group has a team from pots 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively.
If you're in pot 3, it means you get to play against a pot 4 (worse) team.
If you're in pot 4, you're playing 3 teams who are ranked higher than you.
In all scenarios you can luck out and get the host as the pot 1 team, and in this case, they suck.

Would love to see the pre and postgame commentary from the always saucy and sassy British tabloid rags if they played Canada.

I do think the pots are a bit overrated this year with how they are doing it.
Pot 3 has:
Iran
Japan
Morocco
Serbia
Poland
South Korea
Pot 4 has:
Ecuador
Saudi Arabia
Ghana
Cameroon
Wales-Ukraine winner
Peru/UAE/Australia
Costa Rica/New Zealand
(that is assuming Mexico and US in 2nd/3rd)
Its a bit of difference but Pot 4 likely will have 2 South America teams + Wales and Saudi Arabia who has torn through qualifying.
