Flames burn Snowmen tonight 5-2 and Coach Darryl announces the official start of Spring in Calgary, or golf season as it is known in Edmonton.

Remember over the last 4 years how Backlund has been able to elevate and give confidence to younger players that were struggling with 2 way play, playing them on his LW?
Maybe we should try that with Monahan.

The Backlund line plays against the top competition.
Monahan cannot.

Should be a good one after a couple strong games recently from the Flames. Teams like the Avs are the bar the team should strive to benchmark themselves with, not gutter trash like the Oilers.

Jack Edwards and Andy Brickley in Boston give these guys a run for their money.

I'm OK with Monahan in, but I'd have liked Carpenter in and Lewis out.

I wouldn't mind seeing Lucic - Monahan - Carpenter. I really think Lewis needs to sit a game.

I think Monahan and Lucic would benefit with additional speed and freshness on the line. Lewis actually has pretty similar counting stats, but it would be good to try it out. We've seen L-M-L already and it's not a good mix.

Hoping Mony has a killer game!
I still believe he should have a spot on the 2nd PP unit.

Personally I don't see the point of Lucic playing against the Avs. He's a guy that could use a bit of a break as he's having issues handling the puck of late as it's like a grenade on his stick as he can't make a clean pass to save his life. It's been a nice story that he's been pretty useful for the Flames but of late it's been diminishing returns.

Wonder if this is more to get Monahan 100% before playoffs. His struggles are definitely from having to learn his stride all over again.

True enough. His short outlet passes have usually been good, but not for a month or so.

Vladar has started twice against the Avs I think. Good chance Sutter starts him again I think.

I understand where you are coming from, but I think Lucic still has positive value. The leadership, intimidation, physicality - I think those are all still very important parts of his game and contribute to the overall identity of this team. I think teams play differently against us because of our size, and he’s a big (pun intended) part of that.

Depending on the opponent - he could get some rest against a weaker one. But the Avs can be a tough team, especially with new additions.

Seems like maybe a confidence issue for him. His play of late reminds me of his last season in Edmonton where he was really bad. Clearly part of that was due to the environment but he was having similar issues handling the puck.

Thing is, sometimes a physical presence like Looch is just what you need to slow down a team like the Avs with relentless checking...

I like the idea of inserting Monahan into the lineup. But i would also consider having Carpenter with him instead of Lewis.
