As someone who has seen how Estates can be handled...its more common than you might think. A lot more common.

Its not a wonderful thing to think about immediately after the passing of a family member, but you might be surprised at how often, and how quickly, it happens.

Frankly though, this is a hockey forum, as far as I know nobody here is personally related to Melnyk, they can speculate on what they want.

If anything I'm more surprised that anyone not standing to gain personally gives half a crap about what happens to the Ottawa Senators.

More common? sure I get that. not wonderful to think of right after the passing. i get that 100%
but without anyone here as you said, that can gain anything personal from it. why would anyone post about that stuff.

You're surprised that anyone not lined up to get personal gain cares?
I dont know the person or the family, but i sympathize with anyone losing someone before their time

Well yeah because I watched that video and he said while he was alive the team wouldn't be for sale. Then I thought huh, wonder if it will go up for sale. Then I thought maybe they will move.

I get where you're coming from, I do, but it also is not outside of the realm of possibility that since this was an ongoing illness that the Melnyk family have been planning moves in anticipation of the demise of Mr. Melnyk.

Its just...I've seen this happen, a lot.

Its cold, its uncaring, but it happens.

Neither of you are in the wrong. One of you is thinking about it from a perspective of "A man just died."

And another is thinking from the perspective of: "What happens to his team now?"

Neither perspective is wrong. Just different.

May be this is out of topic but as I recall, formal Flames owner, the late Mr. Harley Hotchkiss sold his shares before he passed. It was like he sold them and not soon after, he passed. So, may be Mr. Melnyk already have something like this in process? Because Mr. Melnyk did not die suddenly and it was a long illness.

Just a thought.

I'm pretty sure Melnyk owned the Sens (and their arena) outright, but don't quote me on that.

Condolences to the Melnyk family.

Next owner of the Sens has some big shoes to fill when it comes to providing talking points. Never a dull moment.

RIP Eugene

Hopefully it stays in the Family, I’d almost guarantee the man made it so as his love for that franchise ran deep. RIP

hard to say.
If my dad owned the team and died, I'd probably sell it . I wouldn't want the headache.

But then again, hockey isn't my passion.

Really good read in the Athletic by Ian Mendes about his personal and professional relationship with Melnyk. Not a fluff piece in the least as it details the good side of Melnyk and how their relationship deteriorated over the years.

It's always funny watching the pundit class shuffle around when a notorious assh*le dies.

Sell the team and move them to Quebec City.

Arizona Coyotes become the Houston Coyotes.

Conference alignments remain the same.
