Just in case anyone was still in doubt of the toxic entitlement of celebrity culture. Any regular person who walked up on stage and struck a presenter would be hauled away and eating pavement so fast it would make your head spin. But an A-lister does it and he gets rousing applause from his peers when he accepts an award half an hour later

The fact this most unequal, entitled, narcissistic industry on the planet feels it’s their job to lecture the rest of us on public morality is nauseating.

GI Jane 2 was mentioned and then the Will Smith slap/punch. Is the next sequel Ali 2?

If I had asked you all about 5 years ago, who was more likely to punch someone at the Oscars, who would have had Will Smith instead of Russell Crowe or Sean Penn?

What alternate timeline have I fallen into? And what the hell is wrong with Smith these days? Guy is battling some serious demons. I hope that the Scientologists are keeping him away from any qualified psychology professionals, you know, because they're evil and all. Seems to be doing him a world of good.

At points in their history, very much so, yes. Black comedians refer to it on a regular basis, so it's well known within the culture.

Will Smith has always been a bit of a weirdo, but that put it at a 8/10. At first I thought this was some kind of weird prank or set joke, but the look on Rock's face told it all, good on him for not reacting. Though a brawl at the Oscars would have been awesome.

that's a cheap shot for no reason.

Makes it look like you're equating black culture with violence as part of your retort.

I don't think it's uncommon for someone to not ever watch BET awards.
Heck, I know a lot of people who don't pay attention to any award shows.

Maybe part of being a stand up comedian is always being aware that you may go too far and someone may crash the stage or maybe Rock is just that much of a pro but the way he handled it was pretty amazing as a lost of men would have retaliated and it would have got really ugly for the Oscars.

Add on for me. It just seems wrong that the A listers all rallied around Smith and not the guy that got punched in the face for a pretty harmless joke. And then Smith does that weird a$$ justification and no apology to the guy that he slugged.

You know it's bad when Mel Gibson is shocked by the action.

No doubt those in attendance looked something like this, but the majority of these people weren’t even there last night. This is just a collection of random photos over the years.

That was from a few years back when they announced the wrong Best Picture Winner.

Yes, I am completely unaware of Matata's Black Culture

Whether Chris Rock knew about the alopecia or was making fun of what he thought was a bad hairstyle, it was a tasteless joke. Yes, I know other comedians do it. I don't find them funny either.

Will Smith walking up on stage and hitting him was wrong. He made it all about him. If he wanted to "have his wife's back" (which married couples should do), he could have said something in his speech about Rock being jealous because he had the most beautiful wife in Hollywood, or something like that.

I think it was real. What benefit does anyone get from staging this? Certainly not Will Smith, because instead of talking about his Oscar, people are talking about what an idiot he is. I doubt that's the image he wanted to convey when he's up for best actor.

When Chris Rock saw him coming onstage, he probably was expecting something along the lines of Kanye/Taylor Swift moment - Will Smith grabbing the microphone and telling him off.

Comedians tell jokes. It's what they do. Chris didn't cross any lines, even with the alopecia.

Will Smith is an idiot, simply put. Could have addressed it a million different ways if he was truly offended by it.

The Academy is an embarrassing joke because they didn't immediately remove him. They gave him an award minutes later and applauded him.

I think making jokes about people's appearance and / or medical conditions is tasteless and not funny. YMMV
