And cutting awards for time really didn’t save any so well done there too.

Physically assaulting a defenceless man on national television isn’t defending your wife. It’s psychotic, egotistical and pathetic.

Yeah, she has alopecia. I can understand why he was so angry. He definitely shouldn’t have made an utter spectacle out of himself - I’m sure Jada is beyond mortified.

Didn't Jada handle it with her disapproving over the top eye roll?

The self-absorption is surreal.

One of the best things I’ve seen was Ricky Gervais eviscerate Hollywood at the 2020 Golden Globes. I don’t usually enjoy him but that was fantastic stuff

Why do we associate violence with sticking up for someone? Smith could have made a bigger statement by getting up and walking out forgoing his acceptance of his little statue or better yet, address his wife's condition during his speech which brings awareness and promotes understanding.

I wish Will would just go away for a long time. As has been mentioned he just seems so phony. He was laughing along at first as well.

How common knowledge is Jada’s condition? This is the first I’ve heard about it, but maybe Chris Rock should know? Maybe he just doesn’t pay much attention to to celeb news either, though that might be limiting for a comedian.

He will never ever live this down, and it likely won’t be just a small asterisk for him either. This is gonna stick with him in a bad way. Damn. If he just omitted the assault and yelled his ass off at Chris Rock, hell even pull a Kanye and go up and yank the mic and defend his wife… but you can’t assault. I think it had to be waaay worse of an insult for the public to support a smack.

And good lord, he did not even remotely own it enough in his apology.

Will Smith laughing at the joke to begin with is what gets me. And then there is a glare exchanged by Jada at some point that set ol Willy off. I think this has more to do with their messed up marriage then the joke.

Are we allowed to make fun of them for her cheating on him? Or is that off limits like her hair?

#### both of them

Even if Will had just yelled out like he did with no slap, or said something during the commercial break, ok I guess.

But even in that scenario, it still makes the whole thing about him, which I hate. Shows you what kind of man Will is. Instead of comforting in his wife after a potentially hurtful remark, he has to make the whole thing about himself.

Even his speech after, it was all about how amazing he was and patting himself on the back for defending his wife. Not a single word about his wife or about how Rock should apologize.

Everything Will did tonight was about himself and proving what a big man he is. When really all he did is prove how weak and pathetic he is.

Ya there are a million ways to disagree with something that someone says, especially when its a comedian like Chris Rock, Will Smith chose the absolute worst possible way to react.

For men very common it's called androgenetic alopecia. For Jada it looks to be sudden so a different kind of alopecia but not unheard of for women. Men are endlessly mocked for hair loss so is a joke about it happening to a woman out of line? Dunno, I wouldn't make that joke it's not cool to make fun of things a person cannot change.

Doesn't give anyone the right to up and punch someone in the face.

Will Smith apologized to the Academy and to his fellow nominees for striking presenter Chris Rock on the Oscars stage.

Quote:
"I want to apologize to the Academy, I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment, and I am not crying for winning an award. It's not about winning an award for me," Smith said following a standing ovation. "Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like Richard Williams ... but love will make you do crazy things."

He continued: "I'm being called on in my life to love people and to protect people and to be a rigor to my people. I know to do what we do, you got to be able to take abuse, you have to be able to have people talk crazy about you. You got to be able to have people disrespecting people, and you gotta smile and pretend like that's OK," Smith said. "And Denzel said to me a few minutes ago, 'At your highest moment, be careful, that's when the Devil comes for you.' I want to be a vessel for love. I want to say, thank you to Venus and Serena … I want to thank them for trusting me with their story. I want to be an ambassador for that kind of love, care and sure."
