These are getting to be some fat pay days for these two guys. At the start of the season it was a question of if they could keep them at under $9m, at this point I think you’re looking at $11m+

Johnny's always come off as someone who wants to win. I can't see him wasting what could be his final NHL contract on a team that isn't immediately competitive.
I feel like we're really lucky the Devils and Flyers are rebuilding, they likely won't be a destination for him because of that. The Rangers are the only other spot near home but they're going to be in a cap crunch with only 10 million in cap space and many holes to fill. Capitals and Bruins are options too, however both those teams are dealing with cap problems as well.
Unless he really just wants to leave I think it probably makes the most sense from a career perspective to stay with the Flames.

Well hopefully the team does something this year because they'll never win with two players making that much.

Not necessarily… next season will be tough with Mangiapane needing a raise too but after that they have some bad contracts expiring (Monahan and Lucic make over $11m combined and their production can be replaced for much cheaper) and still have some very good bargain contracts (Lindholm, everyone on D).
It’s after those bargain guys need new deals that things could get really messy.
But yeah, this season is a really good opportunity for the Flames to get it done with this group, and they know it. Hence the trades.

It’s the going rate these days.
If the Flames cannot win with two players making that much, there will be many teams who will shortly be in similar straights.

I also think that once we are out of the flat cap world, it will go up significantly.

6 guys in the entire league make 11+ per year.
28 make 9+. Less than 1 per team average.
Just sayin.
Obviously a few more will join those ranks as we move forward, but teams will have to be very cautious because if you get one of them wrong, nevermind 2 or 3, will handcuff organizations for years.

Monahan is an obvious buyout if he can't be traded - would save $4m against the cap next year.
Lucic is harder but he could potentially be a trade candidate if the Flames can pay the signing bonus and then trade him - he has a $1m salary for a $6m cap hit. For those cheapo floor teams - that's there kind of contract. But of course - he has a no move clause so he'd have to agree to it.

Ya, and I think most of those deals were signed before the cap stagnated. That makes a difference too.

But teams can move other players to create cap space. And the competitiveness of teams changes fairly quickly. Last year Calgary didn't look particularly competitive. The Devils in particular look like they could be much better shortly.
Calgary itself has cap problems next year, but they'll manage them.
I'm not saying Johnny won't re-sign, but it won't be because Calgary is the only game in town.

I wonder if that was part of the Conversation when they brought him in from the Oilers. We will take you on and give you a chance but you may have to sacrifice that last year if we need to move you.

That's interesting. It's clear that Lucic wanted out from Edmonton. We have no idea what kind of soft promises were agreed to. It's not impossible that something was said.

Point took 9.5 and Barkov 10 million. Wingers shouldn't get more than that.

I keep thinking we just have to do this small thing and win the Cup this year...then he will probably retire

My predictions:
-Johnny will sign for 8 years, between $9.25-9.75 per (+2.75 current cap hit)
-Matthew will sign for 3/4 years at $9.5 per (+2.5 current cap hit)
-Oliver will sign for 6 years at $4.75 per (+4 current cap hit)
-Yeastmode will sign for 2 years at $5.75 per (+3.25 current cap hit)
With Zadorov & Gudbranson gone, Brower off the books, Monahan traded (retained) or bought out, and the extra $1M in projected cap, this will give us an additional $12.25M to play with.
The increases above will require ~12.5M . This doesn't include the replacements for Zadorov, Gudbranson or Monahan.
Basically someone needs to go. Either one of the above, or someone else on the roster (Lucic? Hanafin?).
My gut tells me it is either Tkachuk, Mangiapane or Hanfin (I don't see Lucic retiring).

As much as it hurts I would move Mangiapane as the return will be extremely nice and pencil Pelletier into that spot for next season.

I expect it will be Magiapane. He will be a difficult signing, after some prior tough negotiations. I think Taffoli was brought in to replace him. Plus, he value is very high, and they can recoup some draft picks.

The Oilers are retaining on Lucic. Actual money owed is $875k, after the signing bonus.

Yeah for sure teams can move players around, it’s just most of them are pretty tight to the cap with key players needing contracts
- Bruins have only 4 million in cap space and need to sign Bergeron and have money for Pastrnak next year.
- NYR have only 6 forwards signed next year and 11 million in cap space and they’ll likely want to re-sign Strome.
- NYI don’t seem competitive and I don’t think a star forward is going to fix those problems. Same goes for NJ and Philly.
- Capitals are the only team that could realistically move money around and not blow up their core. They have 8 mil in cap space and the only key piece to sign is Justin Schultz. However they’re an older team and they don’t have a lot of young talent in the lineup. It doesn’t seem smart as a long term contract.
We have 27 million dollars of cap space, which could grow to 32 million if we can offload Monahan’s contract. 32 million to get Johnny, Chucky, Mangiapane and Kylington under contract. As long as the players want to stay this should be doable.
