If the team are going to scratch him for health reasons now, why the hell would they not have put him on IR and get even more cap room going into the trade deadline?

We have seen periods of improvement in Sean's game this year, so maybe some time off can bring him back refreshed in the PO's.

This is Darryl being Darryl and not throwing Monahan under the bus. No amount of rest and recovery will fix Sean Monahan.

They should go with:

Lucic-Carpenter-Lewis

Why Ritchie over the guy we spent a pick on?

It's interesting that Monahan gets so much negative coverage, but Backlund gets the perpetual pass. Is it simply because the expectations were so much higher for Monahan? Backlund has had better linemates all season long, plus powerplay time, and has 7 points more than Monahan in fewer minutes. Even defensively, I see heavy lifting being done by Coleman, and I though I saw more backchecking energy from Jarnkrok than I've seen from Backlund all season.

Is there really such a huge discrepancy between these two players? Both wear a letter. Both are 'nice guys'. One guy gets a pass, and hasn't been the defensive stalwart we have seen years past. The other guy has taken his defensive deficiency and turned it into league average. Our second line center has 29 points. Our fourth line center has 22 points.

Sean may not be a distraction for his teammates but at this point Its time to ice the best line up to give us a chance to win that may or may not include Sean. Too me he seems out of his element in the bottom 6, he's not mean in nature not saying he isn't competitive. I also think he's just a tad too slow and that can be seen from his hits that he had a couple of weeks ago - he wants to be aggressive but the speed isn't there.

End of the day, he's probably broken - his body couldn't keep up with the physicality of the sport. He will be 28 years old with 41.4 Million in career earnings when this contract is up.

Quick general comment: the goal of any lineup decision should be to improve the team. The goal should not be to 'punish' a player for a mistake or poor play.

"Monahan is a bum. He deserves to be benched"
"Lucic is a bigger bum. Bench him, too"

That's a whole lot of negative energy. I sure hope that's not the attitude of the head coach. It's as if you would rather play short 2 players just to spite a couple of guys.

It's a lot more productive to focus on what will improve the team.

It's the second game after the trade and Carpenter has had one full practice with the team. I suspect he'll play in more games between now and the end of the season than not. I also suspect we'll see a lot of players rotate into and out of the lineup for the rest of the season, especially on the bottom 2 lines.

You get cap space when the player is on LTIR and to put him on LTIR requires him to miss a minimum of 10 games and 24 calendar days. Once he's ready to play, you lose the space.

I think it's actually the opposite.

He's permanently injured.

I agree that Monahan will never be as productive as he was 2 seasons ago.

That said, you're out to lunch if you think that 63 games is not grueling. The regular season is punishing. Every player would benefit from resting some games, the only difference between Sean and most players is that the team doesn't normally benefit from players resting.

With the roster being healthy, and the team being in good position. I think we see most players get a game or two off going forward.

Yeah this is Darryl Sutter giving the player a soft landing. He's on top of everything, he didn't just realize he blew it in handling Monahan.

He could still be hurt, for sure. But this is the coach setting the table to scratch a veteran player without humiliating him.

Agreed. Monahan is not a lazy player at all. It seems that he does give his 100% regularly. It just sucks that his injuries have derailed his career. He also wears a letter, and I’m sure, has a voice in the room.

Not from me. I have argued that both need to go and have certainly showed my displeasure for Backlund since MacKinnon basically destroyed him in the playoffs.

Well Backlund has centered the third most successful line (250+ minutes together, there are 39 of them) in the league this year at 63.6% xGF%

He might be a good two way hockey player too!

Probably because Backlund is a very good player, while Monny is not. Backlund is playing the tough minutes against good players and coming out ahead.

100% this. Maybe this just helps everyone realize the state of Manahan's game today (bottom of the roster player) but also shows the respect that Monahan has earned within the organization.

Yup, trying to save some pride for Sean and also salvage whatever value he has left….

I mean we almost got Lindholm for him, right?

I don’t think his shot is the problem at all. Anyone remember the last goal he scored? That absolute rocket on Hellebuyck? He still has a hard shot and he was still very productive on the PP before he was removed. So his skills are still there.

The problem in my opinion has always been his ability to get it off. The majority of his scoring in the past came off of getting open/lost in the slot. But now, without Gaudreau creating time and space for Monahan, he’s not getting the same type of opportunities anymore. It was the biggest fear I had for Monahan coming into the season and the main reason I predicted a very serious goal scoring dip for him.

If he had developed better one vs one skills over his career such as masking his shot, shooting at angles and being more unpredictable, then he’d probably have more goals today. But as of now, his shots are all telegraphed and very easy to defend. Quite simply put, there’s just not enough weapons in his arsenal.
