81MC, you are lucky that you are only out of money from this thing. The car you sold and didn't unregister could have been used to transport drugs or to use to dump a dead body. And if it was caught, you are in deep sh*t...

IMO it's brutal to pay tax on any 'used' product. Sounds like a great way to further incentivize our disposable economy.

When you sell a car you go to the registry and turn in your license plate.

You will also get a refund on the registration minus a $10 processing fee
You can keep the plate if you want, main thing is keep the bill of sale...make a digital copy.

You are suppose to hand in the plate and unregister

This is why these problems exists! Not trying to be an arse, but this is bad advice

Sell your car , go to registry and turn in plate and unregister. You even get $$ back!

Sure you will be fine after you prove it with a bill of sale and the hassle, but why do you want that ? So you can put the plate on your wall?

Exactly. But there is a bug in the system if your plate fades to the point of being unreadable it can't be replaced. Noob plate for you.

I did have that happen, but that's when you get a specialty plate like the Support our Troops ones. Those are still 6 digits

Is there anyway to get a replacement plate with the same digits as your existing one, or are you always forced to get a brand new plate?

AFAIK
Generic plates do NOT get reprinted. You just get issued a new one.

Vanity plates can be re-printed. But if you have the old kind, you now end up with the skinny letter kind.

Just a follow up,
Wasn’t even worth thinking about. $10.50 at a registry to complete a Statutory Declaration and a bit of an inconvenience once to drive there but otherwise cleared up. Pretty annoyed about the prospect of it being turned into a cube but whatever I guess.
