this is somewhat inspired by a discussion with a couple of friends, but what is the general feeling on this type of hit?
i feel like the shark - gadjovich was approaching from the rear, and yeah, matty gave him the people's elbow in the mind, i am not sure it was intentional given the gadjovich was coming from a bit of a 7 o'clock angle and then he was not fully upright/extended his upper body and it resulted in the shark players head being down and matty catching him a bit in the mind
I don't believe a penalty was handed out. one friend noted matty is approaching a level of PK Subban and the slew foot take down.

Slewfoot involves skating up behind an unsuspecting player which is why it's so dangerous. MT's reverse hit is borderline an elbow to the head. Gadjovich is engaging MT and since hitting is legal, he should be aware it could happen.

Same nothing burger it was the first time we discussed it
His arm swings as a balance issue, and his elbow bends (as elbows do), but it doesn't actually contact the Shark. Contact to the head is with Tkachuk's shoulder.
It's just a bad angle that makes it look (briefly) like the elbow hits the head - it does not
I think it's a legal play, the risk is that it's harder to square up because the guy is coming up from behind you, which means it's possible to catch them with an errant elbow if you're unlucky or not careful. On this play I think he gets him more with the upper arm versus the elbow -- borderline but likely a good non-call.
Serious question, is a reverse hit even legal though? You aren't allowed to hit players with who don't have the puck, or haven't had it.
So why can a player with thepuck stop, and reverse momentum into the player coming towards them? Don't get me wrong, it happens a lot, and also two players racing for an open puck often engage prior to getting to it, and penalties don't seem to get called. But technically speaking, is it actually allowed, checking a player who doesn't have and never had the puck?

Is it any different than a player hitting someone who is trying to check them from the front? Player is engaging the player with the puck.
Also, nowhere near slewfooting from PK, that is much worse.

I assume it would fall under this part of the Interference rule:
Quote:
A player is allowed the ice he is standing on (body position) and is not required to move in order to let an opponent proceed. A player may “block” the path of an opponent provided he is in front of his opponent and moving in the same direction.

Perfectly legal as long as he doesn’t get the elbow up, or do some sort of backward head butt. He learned better technique since Doughty. And if guys think twice about coming in full speed behind him, good.
