A loss like this is a good wake-up call. If they play to the level of the opposition their run might be ended by a wild card team. Better they understand that now.

Strictly observational and I'm not adept enough to back these observations with stats. I do believe Carpenter is going to supplant Monahan as the 4th line center. I don't know if it's physical or between the ears. Either way it's tough to see the fall.

Yeah, this is what I’ve been seeing for quite some time, not even exclusive to just this season. It’s a big reason I was pushing for a trade in the offseason, there was just no fit. Monahan, much like James Neal, needs to be paired with someone who can play with pace.

Both Lucic and Monahan actually need this to hide their skating deficiencies. But right now, there’s isn’t much available for either of them, so unfortunately, they’re both stuck on the misfit line that’s just slow and ineffective.

I just hope those odd rumblings about the Bruins suggest there may be a landing spot for the guy without having to a) buy him out or b) chew up assets to move him.

This is my concern....they seem to float with teams that are "bad" and seem to think they can just play shinny and win...especially when they get a couple of goals to start. Then they just....slide.

A bit weird that the Flames lost in exactly the same fashion as the Coilers last night. Were winning...gave up 2 quick ones...furious finish...lost.

They played like a team that felt comfortable in the standings. Even though they seemed to have a decent advantage with possession they didn't do anything with it. There was a lot of sloppy hockey last night. Felt like a complete repeat of the Buf game. Good thing is they had a good bounce back after that loss...kind of wish we were playing Edmonton vs Arizona next.

I care about how they play the good teams. I am not concerned that they lost a meaningless game. It's an 82 game season, and it happens.

Hmm?? Has there been whispers coming out of Boston about being interested in 23? It does make sense considering they lost an important guy in Krejci down the middle suddenly this year.

Monahan is done in Calgary after this season no matter what happens. He is barely an NHLer at this point.

Acknowledge it's a small sample size, but that works both ways if he's to be moved off. My point is his small sample has brought some good early signs while the team and he are adjusting to one another.

He's got sneaky good vision, looks to be Backlund-esque in his defensive responsibility, and is a really hard worker. Give it some time with Mang and Coleman and that line will be a Sutter staple IMO.

I just don’t think he has much in the way of offensive chops (I wondered about people’s expectations for him that way). I do think he and everyone else needs to be settled on a line for a while. Even Tkachuk, who looked good on the Backlund line, to me has greater chemistry on the top line.

I get that Sutter maybe feels like the team is in a comfortable position and he can experiment. But the top line got caved in last night, there was not a lot happening offensively in the bottom 6. I really only liked the second line consistently. I feel like whatever lines Sutter goes with need time to develop chemistry.

Really kind of sucks to see Monahan fall like this. I absolutely loved the guy as a player and person (still do).

I also don't think what is happening is because of a lack of desire. Seems to me that his injuries have all piled up. If the rumours of his him having to reinvent his stride because of injury are true, it doesn't seem to be working and he's likely done.

But MAN would it ever be sweet vindication if he started to put it all together for playoffs.

Sutter will have them ready.

Flames historical have gotten complacent down the stretch in playoff years, & it lends itself to an early exit.

Sutter knows what it was like here before he entered the fold.

Last night not showing up for postgame is a good sign that he's cracking down on these guys to try and make sure they bring their best hockey leading up to and into the playoffs, and not just the first half like years past.

He's come here to do one job. I trust that he's hammering these guys into shape.

Flames will have a lot of meaningless games at the end of the season after clinching the division and unable to catch Colorado. That is a good time to tinker. I would want to put Monahan with good linemates for an extended time to see if he can regain some offensive form.

I look at Gostisbehere in Philly. Towards the end, they never gave him a fair shot or put him in a position to succeed. They overpay to move him to Arizona. Now, he looks great, like the player he once was.

In terms of maximizing your assets, its in your bests interests to get Monahan right.

Flames' record this season against the teams that are currently in the bottom 10: 14-2-3, if I counted correctly. Looks pretty good to me.

At the moment, San Jose is no longer in the bottom 10. Include them, and it becomes 14-5-3. That's a .705 points percentage, which is better than the team's overall record. It seems pretty clear the Flames are having trouble with one particular opponent, not with weak teams in general.

Some fans expect their team to win every game against bad teams, but no team is bad enough to lose every game. Then, when their team doesn't win every game it's ‘supposed to’, they go looking for scapegoats.
