Smugglers toss hundreds of refugees to sharks
This is so unbelievable.....
Quote:
The number of people confirmed dead after smugglers forced hundreds of refugees overboard off the coast of Yemen has risen to 29, the U.N. refugee agency said Monday.
Seventy-one people are missing.
The victims are people "who are desperate to escape persecution, violence and poverty in the Horn of Africa," she said.

I'll say.
"Survivors also reported that several Ethiopian women and at least one Somali were raped and abused by the smugglers during the voyage from Bosaso in Somalia's Puntland region....."

I think I need to bookmark this news article and show it the next time somebody says to me something like "Why can't I watch that TV show? Do we live in Canada, or a dictatorship?"
Kinda puts things into perspective.

Ken0042: Who can't watch what TV show? I'm confused about your comment.
Goes to show you how precious freedom is when people are so desperate for it and willing to risk death for it.

I mean when people complain that a Flames game is blacked out in their area, or that they cannot subscribe to HBO. Things like that; and they try to compare those "hardships" to what those people had to endure- to decide that this risk was better than staying where they were.

I see what you are getting at, and I agree. I hate it when people say stuff like that when they obviously have no idea how good we have it compared to most places in the world.

Ohhhh yeah, pretty silly, you could say that about a lot of things. The TV reference threw me off, but I gotcha now. Thought that was what you were getting at but wasn't sure.

It makes you really wonder what the refugees think when they make a decision to go on a crossing like this... Do they know the risks? Do they believe that the smugglers are honestly trying to help them? Are the conditions in the Ethiopian and Somalian camps so bad that, despite understanding the risks and dangers, they feel they have to take that risk? When you look purely at the numbers (an admittedly heartless thing to do), the number of people dying in the crossing is fairly small, compared to the number of people dying in the refugee camps. But the attitude in the west seems to be that people dying in refugee camps is an unfortunate yet unavoidable thing; is it any less of a tragedy than what happened to those who attempted to cross? I get really annoyed at the western media, who seem to think that the only time it's really worth showing tragedies in africa is when they have someone to villainize, probably because the west has gotten bored with stories about africa that imply that we, through our inaction, are the villains.

Turns out, human smugglers just tend to be really bad people. Not sure if you heard about the incident in 2003 in Texas where 19/74 illegals being smuggled into the US in the back of a semi died when they were abandoned inside of the truck in 100F+ weather.

I think I might choose the sharks to be honest....but neither should have ever happened.

God lord that is awful…
You here horror stories about these sort of things during the slave trade and people would just toss slaves into the ocean with rocks tied to there feet but to think things like this happen today is bone chilling..
