While all that is well and good and part of me will always want to see playoff Bennett playing for playoff Sutter I’m more than fine with the trade as the assets acquired helped us land Toffoli and Jarnkrok which arguably provide more for this team then Bennett was/could have.

Ah to dream...
Giordano (or Monahan) to Seattle during expansion draft.
Flames extend Bennett, no money for Zadorov.
To MTL: 2022 1st round pick, 2022 2nd round pick, 2023 5th round pick
To CGY: Tyler Toffoli
To SEA: 2023 2nd round pick, 2023 3rd round pick, 2024 7th round pick
To CGY: Calle Jarnkrok
Gaudreau - Lindholm - Toffoli
Dube - Backlund - Tkachuk
Mangiapane - Bennett - Coleman
Lucic - Monahan - Jankrok
Lewis
Hanifin - Andersson
Kylington - Tanev
Valimaki - Gudbranson

It's hard to go back once a public trade request has been made, especially when the reason for the request is that you feel you deserve more ice-time ahead of another player on the team.
It's easy to use hindsight now and seeing Bennett doing well and Monahan broken down, but I doubt at the time it was great for team morale to have Bennett essentially questioning why Monahan, Backlund and Lindholm were ahead of him on the center depth chart. Even if he was right, I doubt the other three appreciated him going public with that.
When you burn your bridges, the only way ahead is forward.

Yeah I’m not trying to rehash anything, I just found his comments insightful.
It didn’t sound like he burned any bridges though. He talked lots about his time in Calgary and his great relationships with Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk, etc.

Is there any famous antithesis to this? Obviously we know of Roy, Lindros, Bure, Heatley and all those players who famously forced a trade but I'm wondering how often a player requests a trade publicly or becomes public and ends up not being traded.
Debrusk is a potential recent candidate. Tarasenko is a PPG despite his trade request. Both apparently still want to be traded. Drouin requested a trade, was refused, got his #### together, rescinded trade request, then got traded when his value rebounded.
Luongo would welcome a trade, then apparently requested one, then was happy, then was traded over the course of three or four seasons with Canucks.
Duchene was traded a year after his request, though I can't recall when it became public.
I'm sure I'm forgetting or unaware of some famous star youngster who demanded a trade early on in his career only to become a franchise player. I wouldn't necessarily consider holdouts like Iginla or Giordano's early career holdouts to be the same thing.

Maybe Fedorov? Rumoured to have requested trade during stalled negotiations in 1997. Signed the crazy "#### Detroit" offersheet contract amplifying the Karmanos and Illitch feud. And then played a better part of a decade with Detroit including some Cups.
Sakic signing offersheet with Rangers. Lemieux refusing to wear the Penguins jersey. Yzerman rumoured to have accepted a deal to Ottawa for Yashin before the Red Wings owners nixed it.
Again those mostly come down to contracts.

12. I do think Calgary took a looooooooooong look at Hampus Lindholm, but couldn’t do what Boston did. Sean Monahan would have had to be part of it, as the Flames needed to move money to make it work.

15. Would love to get a hold of Chris Drury’s phone log the last few weeks. The Rangers tried some big swings. They were also close on Calle Jarnkrok, only to be edged out by Calgary.

Lindholm isn't great anymore either... Flames dodged a bullet there IMO.

I feel bad for Monahan. The guy has been an unreal Flame from day 1 but injuries have reduced him to a shell of what he used to be and now a large portion of the fan base has turned on him.

It'll work out in the end. He'll get his cup this year and leave the team in the offseason with a shiny ring on his finger.

I know we need to move him for cap, but it Is the first year post injury recovery. Good players find a way to reinvent themselves

Bennett had 12 points and they were offered two seconds for him...not surprised at all they moved him.
He has obviously done well since but that is irrelevant at the time of the trade

Agreed. The note didn't say the Ducks rejected Monahan, just that he would have needed to be a part of the deal. Maybe the Flames weren't on board.
Sean Monahan is accepting a less glamorous role with the team, and doing a decent job of playing fundamental hockey, providing minutes from lower lines and minimizing chances against. That's not a role guys accustomed to top 3 assignments always accept. It appears he has accepted this, and is actually doing a better job of controlling the puck and helping his line move from the defensive zone into at least the perimeter of the offensive zone then he has in the past. He may not have the stats, but he appears to be rounding his game, and is exhibiting leadership through doing whatever it takes to contribute to team success. A number of guys can score goals playing with elite talent, but not everyone is able and willing to do what Monahan has done this year, so I think he is entitled to some respect for what he is bringing to the table.

He's living in Florida, playing on one of the best teams in the NHL, having a career year, and driving a McLaren daily. Sounds pretty awesome.
