Game Night: Sharks at Flames

WHY WATCH?

FINISHED PRODUCT

These are the guys they’re going with. The Pacific Division-leading Flames didn’t make any top-of-the-ticker transactions on trade deadline day, hardly a surprise since Brad Treliving struck early to add Tyler Toffoli and Calle Jarnkrok to his forward cast.

Tuesday’s tilt at the Saddledome pits the top squad in the Pacific Division standings against one of the cellar-dwellers, but the Flames realize these Sharks have some bite. In fact, the Men in Teal have won both meetings so far this season.

POINTS LEADERS

FLAMES

Johnny Gaudreau — 62 GP, 28 G, 52 A, 80 PTS, +44
Matthew Tkachuk — 62 GP, 29 G, 45 A, 74 PTS, +37

Elias Lindholm — 62 GP, 31 G, 33 A, 64 PTS, +46

SHARKS

Timo Meier — 57 GP, 26 G, 33 A, 59 PTS, +1

Tomas Hertl — 62 GP, 25 G, 24 A, 49 PTS, -5

Logan Couture — 58 GP, 20 G, 26 A, 46 PTS, -9

SPECIAL TEAMS

FLAMES: PP — 23.6% (11th) PK — 85.3% (4th)

SHARKS: PP — 19.1% (21st) PK — 85.9% (3rd)

Advanced Stats:

Flames:

Shot Attempts: 55.49% (2nd)
High-Danger Chances: 56.54% (1st)

Sharks:

Shot Attempts: 45.15% (31st)
High-Danger Chances: 50.68% (16th)

Sharks at Flames Preview: Measuring the heat

Since the last time these two teams laced up on Dec. 7, 2021 — when the Sharks took a 5-3 win — much has changed, some quite recently. The trade deadline has come and gone, and the Flames added important pieces in Tyler Toffoli and Calle Jarnkrok in February and March. The Sharks, meanwhile, inked Tomas Hertl an eight-year extension last week, effectively ousting a concern that has harried them all season.

A smart strategy going into Tuesday’s game might be to use the Flames as a measuring stick. If head coach Bob Boughner is still around next season, it may be a perfect opportunity to see how his team measures up against the best in the division this year. Joe Will and Doug Wilson should also be paying attention. The Flames can roll all four lines: their center-depth, for example, has pushed Sean Monahan to the fourth-line.

Couple frustrating losses against this season. I was at the 4-1 game earlier this year and the score definitely wasn't indicative of the play. Hopefully the boys can get one back tonight.

Crazy they haven't beaten the Sharks yet this year. Different team in red tonight though, Flames will crush em.

So Daily Faceoff is showing Carpenter in for Lewis.

Is Carpenter a Lewis replacement in the starting 12 with Ritchie and Lewis being the extra forwards? Or is this a one off to see the new guy?

Lewis had those two terrible turnvoers in Vancouver in the third period, after being pushed down the lineup after the Buffalo game.

Probably reading too much into it ... but if they think Carpenter can play a more consistent 5 on 5 game he might be seen as an upgrade.

Will see I guess ... plus I'd rather see some affirmation from the Calgary media on who's going tonight.

Final 20 games of the year, the last quarter push to stay atop the pacific! Quite an interesting position to be in for a change! Really like the thought of mixing and matching different combos to get as many looks as we can with this roster!
