I agree they should show his game winning goal in game one of the scf.

I personally don't think Vernon should have been retired, but as a young franchise it's whatever.
Lanny's pure on-ice performance doesn't warrant a retirement, but is there really a more iconic Flame? Iggy only. And it's arguable.
Retirements are only for very special players. Not just for "the best player on the team for a stretch of time".
|
How old are you? Lanny had a 66 goal season for the Flames. In the cup year he was more of a role player but got it done when it mattered.

I completely forgot about Chris Benoit. Fleury is obviously not that extreme, but I wouldn't be surprised if he also had some serious brain damage over the years from both head injuries and drug abuse. Could explain why he's fallen so far off his rocker. I honestly think he needs help.

Someone posted a video on Facebook where Theo was speaking to a crowd of anti-vaxxers. He looks like he’s gained about 50 pounds and spewing a bunch of conspiracy theory nonsense. The Flames have made the right decision in distancing themselves from him, despite all of his on-ice accomplishments.

The Flames can retire whatever the hell numbers they want, they don't need a player's permission.
That said, it'll look reeeeeeeeeeal stupid if they retire a number and the player says "I refuse to come to the number retirement ceremony."

its off topic, but despite what MacInnis thinks (and I'm not saying he doesn't have an opinion) in my mind he's more a Flame than a Blue (in the same way a guy like Andre Dawson wanted to be perceived as more a Cub than an Expo the numbers just don't bear it out)
for MacInnis its a bit closer than the Dawson example, but both were more 'famous' and won their big award (Norris, MVP) in the American city, but I would argue were better players, longer and drafted and developed (which in my mind is important) in the Canadian center
MacInnis more games, points (nearly 2:1), plus minus (nearly 2:1) , season end Allstar teams as a Flame. a Conn Smythe. his only cup
the thing is for some reason he only became appreciated as a nuanced 2 way superb dman in St Louis, yet in Calgary he was that for a long time- he had the slap shot only chaos reputation, that really by about 1985 was no longer true

They could just arbitrarily limit the player numbers allowed for a few seasons, and then somebody is forced to take it, thereby stripping it of any Theo association. Problem solved .

So Theo’s Warrior record of most goals by a 16 yr old fell the other day to Brayden Yager. Theo sent him a nice video message which they played before the game tonight. No conspiracies just a cool hockey moment. Yager got another tonight and the way they are playing I wouldn’t be surprised if he hits 40.

Will never happen. As much as I disagree with Fleury's crazy takes he is still considered iconic in Flames lore. The franchise might never retire his number but the players have.

Niewy and MacInnes were both better players and those numbers are still in rotation. MacInnes is STILL the all time assists leader, and by a decent margin. You could throw Gary Roberts into that category too.
No one wants #14 for fear of backlash from Theo, not out of respect I'll warrant.

Posters in other threads have said he didn't want his number retired by the Flames, so you have to respect that.
For my money, he and Iggy were the two best Flames ever.

#2 is hanging from the rafter as a Forever a Flame.
He also has been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a Calgary Flame (well the REAL one the Cape Breton Hockey Hall of Fame )
Plus he has an arena named for him, which an idiotic Flames Fan took a picture of with his car flag flapping in the wind.
What could really be better than that?
