Only way Gio gets in the Hall is buying a ticket like the rest of us.

Randy Carlyle is the only eligible Norris trophy winner who isn't in the HHOF. I'd probably put Gio in the same category as Carlyle.

SEA trades Giordano (50% retained) and Blackwell to TOR for 22 2nd, 23 2nd , 24 3rd

I think that’s legitimate. They obviously don’t need him to be a leader, and the question is, would he accept a lesser role or fall back into old habits? And I do wonder about the Tkachuk rift.
But purely from a hockey POV, adding a vet who can still play at a very high level to tutor the rookies — who we’re going to need to play next year — on how to be an everyday pro has some real value, especially given how we’re going to need to keep costs low on that 3rd pair.

It's just business, but I do feel for Gio.
After everything he did for this franchise and community, just to get claimed by a garbage expansion the same year your former team becomes a legitimate cup threat. That's gotta sting.
Happy for him that he's going to Toronto, but unless they figure out their goaltending the Leafs aren't going too far.

No, but he should either get a Flames jersey retirement, or at the very least be honored as a Forever A Flame. If it weren't for the expansion draft, he would have played over 1000 games with the organization.

Before this week I would have agreed. But you're ignoring the TOR factor...his chances just quadrupled.
It is an interesting discussion with this crop of D who dominated the 2010s.
Chara
Keith
Doughty
Hedman
Each of the above have a Norris and Cup(s) (Chara being the only guy with just one Cup, but of course now he's the all time leader in gp among D). All 4 seem like shoo-ins, but the next tier is interesting:
Karlsson** (Norris*2)
Subban* (and OG in 2014, but only played 1 game)
Burns*
Giordano*
Josi*
Letang (SCx3)
Pietrangelo (1, OG)
Carlson (1)
Seabrook (3, OG)
Weber (OGx2)
Suter
Vlasic (OG)
Of course all 11 of these guys are better than Kevin Lowe, but I'm not sure any make the Hall. The list of Norris winners outside the hall seems certain to include Subban, and likely Gio/Josi barring late career heroics. Karlsson and Burns might have interesting cases.
Most of the Canadians (and some of the others) above have some combination of U20s and World Cups and World Championships.
Weber is an interesting case as he might be the best player of those 11, and has won pretty much everything possible except the Stanley Cup: WHL x2, Memorial Cup, World Championship x2, World Cup.
I'm not sure I'd induct anyone other than the first 4 I listed, but Weber, then Burns/Karlsson would be my next level. Of course Josi/Pietrangelo/Carlson are the youngest of the bunch and could collect some more hardware.

Sounds like Gio wasn’t required to make a list until just recently. I thought most had to be beginning of the season.

oh Gio,
I honestly think this is a dream of his, playing in his home city to finish out his career.
He is all class.

Glad to see Gio will have a chance at the playoffs this season with his hometown Leafs. I still don’t like the way he was forced to exit here and I’m sure it crushed him inside to leave.
His stats may not look too pretty this season, but his competitiveness and work ethic will always land him a job at this level. His skating is obviously a weakness at this point of his career, but his elite hockey sense and instincts should make him a quality dman for a long time. Under the right system, I think he can still flourish.

Interesting factoid after the dust has settled...

Seattle now has more picks in the next three years (33) than players under contract (32) after parting ways with Mark Giordano, Colin Blackwell, Calle Jarnkrok, Jeremy Lauzon and Marcus Johansson.

Might being an undrafted player who became captain and won the Norris move the needle?

Gio's career was so odd. Peaked as he got older which is confounding as well

I don't think so. He had a run of six seasons where he was one of the better defensemen in the league. I don't think that makes him HOF worthy in fact I don't think he's even in the conversation.

Yeah, I agree. Love Gio, but the suggestion he could be HOF worthy is Oilers level homerism. The suggestion would probably embarrass him.
