Sadly, history usually repeats. No matter how many times we say "never again", history repeats.

I was hoping we'd see a silver lining repeating, in that hopefully this is the end of Putin, after a failed invasion of Ukraine. Obviously, I hope this doesn't drag on for 10 years, the way Russia's invasion of Afghanistan did.

Russia is not as powerful as the USSR was, and the world cares much more about Ukraine than they did/do Afghanistan.

Russia and Putin will fall, it's just a question of when.

So the drones that the US gave recently. Is there any way to determine where is is being piloted from? If not could this not be a way the US could covertly help?

MOD map updates for the day. No real movements today apparently with Russians pulling back to protect their supply lines as Ukrainians are upping convoy attacks and front line troops cannot get resupplied. No updates either on the apparent Ukrainian counter attacks either.

With the amount of sanctions being applied to the country, I can't imagine this dragging on in its current state (perhaps some proxy battles via "separatists" ala 2014).

USSR was far more self-sufficient in the 1980s and not as tied into the global trading / financing system as before.

The worry always is when one dictator falls, what rises up from the ashes? Yeltsin/Putin have had 30 years to build an inherently exclusive and extractive nation built on illiberal "democracy". Replacing Putin does not fix the system that was created previously, nor does it mean we will see a leader whom is any better.

However, Putin certainly needs to go

CRTC moves to remove Russia Today and Russia Today French channels from Canadian broadcast. Both Shaw and Telus will be removing them from their channel lineups shortly.

Quote:
Television channel RT, previously known as Russia Today, was removed Wednesday from the list of programming services and stations authorized by The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.

The broadcast regulator said in a statement that it was “concerned with programming from a foreign country that seeks to undermine the sovereignty of another country, demean Canadians of a particular ethnic background and undermine democratic institutions within Canada.”

Some carriers had already voluntarily removed the Russian state-controlled international television network, which has been authorized for distribution since 2009, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last month.

The CRTC initiated a public consultation March 3.

“Freedom of speech and a range of perspectives are a necessary part of our democracy. However, it is a privilege and not a right to be broadcast in Canada,” said Ian Scott, chairperson and chief executive of the CRTC. “Foreign channels can be removed from the authorized list should their programming not be consistent with the standards to which Canadian services are held, or their continued distribution no longer serves the public interest, as was the case for RT and RT France.”

Keep in mind these are just independently verifiable losses w/ video/pictures confirming the burned out hulls. I'm sure the real numbers are somewhere in between what the Ukrainians are saying and this.

They were also completely inept in Red Dawn.

The east is looking dicey for Ukraine. They have a lot of their good troops there who could be in danger of encirclement. That would free up a lot of Russian forces to head north and that's the ball game.

Here is the version being displayed in the Russian media.

It certainly paints a more dire picture for Ukraine, likely exaggerated for propaganda purposes, which I am sure they are both doing. The shaded blue part is supposed to show the bulk of the Ukrainian army. If it is true, they are fubar'd.

In Afghanistan the Russian's didn't understand the enemy they were fighting. They were prepared to fight a modern war but let the Afghan's drag them into the mountains, and fight then with a fairly low tech war, with hi tech anti-air at the time.

The Russian's have fallen into the same trap here. They didn't understand that the Ukrainian military wasn't going to confront them in piecemeal battles and let themselves get sucked into ambushes and fire sacks.

The Russian General's that were killed were killed due to simple incompetence and over confidence. Making satellite calls in the open, stupid. Staying on the radio too long and letting the enemy pinpoint your command posts, outright rookie mistake.

To be honest and I know I'm going to get #### on here. but young Russian men and generally Ukrainian men woman are children are victims of these field generals. So yeah, I don't mind some general's get snuffed out.

Right now to me the difference in this war is leadership, the Ukrainian's have it the Russian's don't. With the edge in equipment, technology and sheer men and the ability to control the skies, right about now the Russian's should be trampling the last resistance in Ukraine. Instead they are bogged down, out foxed, and have been denied the mobile set piece war that they wanted to fight.

I want to see this thing end, its not going to though.

Why eastern Ukraine is fighting so hard against Russia, despite being Russian in origin.

This map is fairly comical, they haven't taken anywhere close to that much land, shows places like Kharkiv as being completely swallowed when we know that's untrue. The one above it is from wikipedia and is probably as reliable as they get.
