Sutter does hate penalties. Mentions them almost every presser. And while he never benches for a single game performance, he does for multiple games.

He may see this as a chance to get Stone another game. I don’t think NJ is a big physical forechecking team is it?

8th overall. He was on a high level high school team, but he’d also played a bunch of high level tournaments where he caught attention and Gretzky recruited him for his QMHL team.

American high school is a bit different, there have been quite a few players drafted from there.

Crazy thing is Janko was playing Canadian high school. That’s virtually unheard of.

If there is actually any smoke to the Monahan rumors, then I’m thinking the Flames are gunning for Hertl as a clear upgrade at center.

I think Treliving knows this is his best shot at a cup and will go all in to make that upgrade. Picks, prospects, whatever it takes.

Being able to trade Monahan clears up some of the cap crunch this summer and allows them to get better for a playoff run.

The ISL prep-schools are on another tier when it comes to some random prep-school in Canada.

Hanifin was drafted out of the ISL as well.

EDIT: Hanifin graduated early and played for Boston College first.

What is a Group VI free agent?

A player who is on an expiring contract and is 25 years old or older, as of June 30.
A player who has completed three or more professional seasons. A professional season is 11 or more professional games (at any level) at the age of 18 or 19, or just one professional game at the age of 20 or older.
A player who has played in fewer than 80 games, or 28 games of 30 minutes or more as a goaltender. (Note: This requirement was prorated down due to the pandemic.)
If all three of those criteria are met, the player becomes a full-fledged UFA at the end of the season and is afforded all of the same rights as other UFAs.

That status can create significant leverage for the player, and it can also make him a trade target if he has no intention of re-signing with his current team.

Two recent Group VI free agents have become impact players.

Michael Bunting became a Group VI UFA last summer after falling way short of the games played threshold with the Arizona Coyotes. His 10 goals in 21 NHL games put him on the radar of the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he signed a two-year, $1.9 million deal that has him in the Calder Trophy conversation and among the best bargain buys in the league this season.

Carson Soucy also hit Group VI UFA status in 2020 after a breakout, 55-game season with the Minnesota Wild. Rather than let him walk as a free agent, the Wild re-signed him to a three-year deal worth $2.75 million per season. He was ultimately claimed by the Seattle Kraken in the 2021 Expansion Draft.

Teams have already begun to lock-up pending Group VI guys, like the Washington Capitals did by re-signing Joe Snively on Wednesday.

Won't bring much in return, but maybe a guy that fills out a depth need better.

They didn't go off the board. Other teams were interested in him in the first round. This has become part of the narrative over the years, but it simply isn't true.
Centres often go sooner than projected
Big centres go even sooner
Big strong skating centres go even sooner.

It ended up not being the right decision, but the rationale made sense. It's how you get a potential top 6 centre with a later pick. You accept the risk because of the higher upside if it works out.

I didn't like pumping the tires but I also see it largely being irrelevant.
EDIT: The worse pick was Patrick Sieloff. The combination of his size and lack of offensive production in junior made him an almost impossible bet to make the NHL.

Monahan is on pace to score 30 points this year and making 6.4 million. You probably have to pay a first just to move him. As an example. Patrick Marleau was making 6.25 million and Toronto paid a first to the Canes to dump him for the last year of his contract. He scored 37 points for the Leafs that year.

Over a decade difference age wise...Flames are not paying a first to move one year of Monahan
