I've thought often of Orwell since the election of Trump and what's happening in Russia is what an unchecked Fox News and GOP will be in 10-20 years.
I've been thinking about that quote that the Chernobyl miniseries opened with...

I went down a rabbit hole, but couldn't help think that the information made sense.
In 2012, a member of the United Russia party (Putin's party) suggested that when Ukraine joined an economic union with Russia (it was assumed at the time that they would), that 7 million Ukrainians would be relocated to Siberia to create a demographic barrier against Chinese demographic encroachment, and that the population in Ukraine would be replaced with ethnic Russians to further Rusify the country.
https://www.pravda.com.ua/rus/news/2012/12/24/6980376/ (translate to English using Google)
In 2014 and again in 2016, Russia (allegedly) forced Ukrainians from Crimea and occupied areas to relocate to Siberia.

When you look at the magnitude of destruction in civilian areas, it can be considered that the purpose of making Ukrainian cities unlivable, would be to forcibly relocate them to Siberia as per the 2012 proposal. Give them nothing to return to and somewhere else to go (whether they want to take the offer or not). After the proposed customs union failed, this was the next step their ethno-engineering plan.
I don't know the reputation of all the sources (Ukrainian and Russian), but it isn't like Russia hasn't had a history of doing this.

I hope you're wrong but yeah, this feels like a modern day equivalent of standing in front of a tank in Tiennamen Square.

MOD map updates for the day. Russia's Eastern MD Group has made some small advances south as part of Russia's larger objective to encircle Kyiv and Western MD grouping advance is eroding the Ukrainian encircled area of control around Nizhyn. In the south, the Southern MD and airborne groupings have consolidated control around Mykolaiv, while advancing eastward to link up with the push from Luhansk, which made it further into Ukraine today. Other areas remain static.

They aren't North Korea, and the very fact that someone actually did this in the first place demonstrates that. In North Korea, no one would try a stunt like that. There is real public unrest in Russia, actual protests and many others who are too scared to protest but actively oppose the current actions of the government, and what the public thinks and does in Russia actually matters. There's a legitimate possibility that Putin is overthrown by his own people in some fashion or other - in North Korea that threat does not exist.

If anyone has experience overthrowing governments, it's the Russians.

Great speech today. Basic message, thanks for what you've done, but we need more, we need a no fly zone to stop the bombing. Sanctions aren't enough.

I saw a bit last night with General Mackenzie & General Hillier, both were calling for no fly zones. I think it was Mackenzie that said NATO should call Putin's bluff. I am inclined to agree.

From how I understood it, if they declare a no fly zone, then NATO would actively be engaging anything in the air over Ukraine. Which means a direct NATO attack on Russians.
That would lead down a path there is no coming back from I think.
Is there precedent during the cold war?

More then that is that a nofly zone would use bases in NATO countries which invites strikes against them by Russia, that would certainly escalate things in a hurry.

My Siberian mother-in-law, is now convinced that the West started the war in Ukraine, that Putin had no choice but to go in and defend Russians, and that her daughter is going to be abused by Canadians. She even said we should have left our two year old daughter in Russia!
Propaganda is a powerful thing... I’m not even going to try and present an alternative theory of events.

Well she's still alive and was in court today. I saw some tweets saying all she got was a fine, which seems unbelievable, but I guess I'll wait for more reliable sources to confirm.
