I could see Treliving trying to get another piece with a few years left on their contract

With the Toffoli deal, I get a sense that he is starting to build “the new core”. This way if we lose one or more of Gaudreau/Tkachuk/Mang, there are players already in place to take on that role

Performance wise, yeah absolutely look to move Monahan at the deadline.

I worry what it would do to the dressing room on a reportedly tight knit group.

Almost smells like the Ference for Stuart trade. That reportedly really rocked the room.

Not necessarily. If they can find the right guy with term they might acquire him and use him to bolster the team this year while providing insurance for the future in case they are unable to get long term commitments from Gaudreau and/or Tkachuk.

Using the above example, if they are able to acquire Barzal and have him to build around in the future, it would hurt a lot less if Gaudreau walked. It might also help to convince Johnny to stay. And if Johnny stayed then with Barzal and Toffoli in the fold you can look to trade Tkachuk and/or Mangiapane if they aren't willing to commit or you can't fit them in. Recoup some major future assets and still have a highly competitive roster.

The problem with moving Monahan now is he’s basically a cap dump with negative value. So you’re paying the cap dump price plus the price of whoever you’re bringing in. If he is dealt now for another C, the cost will be high.

The GM has pledged he'd move heaven & earth to sign Gaudreau & Tkachuk.

Acquiring another player with term would signal he's not even going to try to sign at least one, to both the team & the player. Right before a playoff run.

Not likely. IMO

I think Treliving is trying to trade Monahan for a good 3rd line centre with expiring contract. This team's future is still not clear with many top players needs a new agreement next year. So they wants to help the team for the playoff this year and more cap space for the next year.

Only two teams I can see openly taking Monahan and his contract on would be Phoenix and Seattle and the cost for them to take that contract on would be high.

Dube + Valimaki + 23 1st + Pelletier/Coronato would be pieces going the other way along with Monahan I’d imagine.

It’s a high price but we have mega raises coming up so it’s a tough call… if you can remove Monahan’s cap though and create flexibility for the off-season it’s hard not to do it. Time will tell.

Nick Schmaltz is a guy I saw as a good basis for a Monahan trade two off-seasons ago. Might still be a good fit. Schmaltz is the better player today, but the Coyotes are stripping it to the studs and are willing to sell cap space. And Treliving still has connections in Phoenix.

Of course Schmaltz still has term left, so a deal would complicate the cap situation in the offseason. It wouldn’t help with the cap crunch, but it would improve the #2 C situation going forward.

Monahan + Coronato + 2023 1st might do it. But maybe even the Coyotes aren’t interested in dealing away their #1 C.

My final predictions for the 2022 trade deadline :

Monahan (2M retained) to Boston
Debrusk (retaining 2M) to Seattle
Jarnkrok to Calgary

Boston desperately needs a third line scoring centre, but hasn't found a team that would flip Debrusk for the honor. Monahan fits the bill and the cap hit is reasonable under these circumstances. Seattle needs to take some chances on some potential high end reward, and Debrusk would get the top six spot he has always craved. Jarnkrok fits Calgary as a swiss army knife.

Giroux to Calgary (50% retained)
Valimaki, 2022 2nd (fla)

Giroux has actually said that he would prefer signing right back to Philly next year, should he be dealt. He is a pure rental to any team. The most often landing spot for him is Florida, where they offer Owen Tippett and a 2nd or 1st, in an identical deal to the one above. A bit might need to be added, but that's the core of it.

Glen Gawdin to Buffalo
Mark Pysyk to Calgary

There is your dependable defenseman that can eat popcorn or play.

Do you think the flames have toiled with the idea of moving Tkachuk in the off season? Kyrou + 1st + good prospect?
Gaudreau Lindholm Toffoli
Mangiapane. ???? Kyrou
Coleman Backlund Lewis

Go hard after another good center.
Probably a long shot, but if Tkachuk’s long term contract demands are to high, I could see something like this going down.

I think that no matter what happens, Calgary wants to extend their window for at least another year. Tarasenko + Neighbors + 2023 1st would be the start. Kryou is good but doesn't drive the play like Tarasenko. If they can only keep one of Johnny or Matty, they keep Johnny. Ideally keep both somehow.

LOL, Monahan fits the bill of a "scoring" 3rd line center for Boston? He can't even score on any line here.

4 good assets to get them to take Monahan's contract for one year? No. The cost would be more like one 1st, maybe even a 2nd.

If the Flames wanted to move Monahan that badly, they would buy him out, long before giving up 4 good assets

I am sure Tre has talked to teams about what they would give up for Tkachuk and Mangiapane, as well as other players on the team. Not because the Flames want to trade them, but because they might need to. A lot of things will depend on how they do in the playoffs

Monahan talk at 39:45

https://www.sportsnet.ca/960/boomer-...ne-storylines/

Says there are teams interested in seeing if he can return to form. He wouldn't put a high probability on a trade happening, but he did just add him to his trade board and says he would be in play if the Flames were to make a big deal.

Monny is a third line scoring centre? We should keep him then, we need one too.

Do you have any other setting than negativity? You have had a one track mind for a year now. It is depressing, sad, and frankly just pathetic.

Things can change pretty quickly if a prime aged 1C becomes available and you are able to acquire him.

I agree it's unlikely but nothing is written in stone.
