Every once in a while the DoPS gets it right. I think this is fair.

Dangerous cross check. Two games makes sense. I was thinking that he might get away with it, being a star.

If the ref actually calls the penalties on Dahlin first then this doesn't happen.
Oilers fans complain about the abuse McDavid takes, but watching some Leafs games lately and Matthews probably gets it worse and rarely draws a penalty.

What penalties...it's a battle in front of the net .. everything was fine until the cross-check to the neck

I was shocked that it wasn't called a major on the ice.
Cross check above the shoulders is an automatic major under HC rules.

I think it should have been 3-5. It was ugly and dangerous.
But I'm surprised they even gave a Leaf two games, so that's good at least.

A case could be made for roughing or interference. It's not like Dahlin is making a play for the puck. Obviously a cross check to the neck needs to be dealt with but this isn't the kind of net front battle you see 20 times a game. Suspension deserved.

Literally the first day of Playoffs in one of my Yahoo Fantasy leagues in which Matthews is my star lmao RIP.
At least I won $200 for finishing with the most points.

 Pain.

I think he got one for the cross check, and an additional game for sporting that creep mustache of his. If it was revealed that he drives around in an early 90's full size GM cube van with peeling paint...I will not be surprised on bit.

Umm Matthews didn't have the puck, and he was cross checked first in the lower back, then tried to push him into the cross bar and knocked him down, before Matthews cross checked him.

Even the DPS video acknowledges that Dahlin and him were in a "shoving match" and that Dahlin tried to push him into the net. If they call the first cross check on Dahlin (lower back right at the top of the crease), or the interference when Dahlin tries to push him into the cross bar/ net then I doubt it escalates. This isn't even specific to this play, NHL lets way too many cross checks to the lower back happen in front of the net with no call.

I'm not surprised that Matthews retaliated after Dahlin tried to push him into the cross bar.

Seems like victim blaming...a reasonable amount of battle is aloud around the net but there is a line. There is no excuse to cross-check somebody in the neck.

I'm not blaming Dahlin.

I blame the refs. Generally in the NHL when two guys start cross checking each other away from the puck as much as Dahlin and Matthews were it escalates. The first cross-check in the back I can see letting go, but the refs probably should have stepped in when Dahlin tried to push him into the net/crossbar, and then gave him another shot as he was getting back up.

Matthews is in the blue paint and the Dman is pushing him out of there which is his job. Matthews gives the first cross-check. The refs egregious error was giving them both 2 mins for all that. How Matthews doesn't get a major there in a 5-2 game with 90 seconds left is crazy.

Matthews is 100% responsible for cross-checking a guy in the neck at full force. Dahlin didn't even deserve a 2 min penalty he pushed a guy standing in his crease.

Puck is irrelevant, you don't allow a guy to stand in the blue paint...ask Sutter

Matthews deserves a suspension. I just hate the lack of consistency. Drouin cross checked a guy twice in the head this season on the ice and was fined. This crap happened last year against Montreal and there was no discipline at all.https://twitter.com/user/status/1503344889584619524 |

And then thinks he's going to stand there behind the goalie...he is driving the net in the last few minutes of a 5-2 game. Go to the net you might get pushed... obviously. Major over reaction cost him and it's not anybody else's fault.

I think we all agree here he deserves his suspension. But we always talk about how fast this game is. Dahlin pushes him into the crease and then gives him 2 more shots. I feel like you'd have a different tone if this was done to Chucky/Lindy/Bread. You play to the whistle. It's not against the rules to continue competing in a game your team is leading.

Those guys battle at the net every game...it's a couple pushes, the Dman is doing his job. I hope the Flames D would be at least that rough.
