I think the waivers issue isn't that Ritchie wouldn't clear, but that he would have to clear before they could send him down. There wasn't enough time.

I suspect this is just a numbers game. Kylington isn't ready to come back in right away, and with Richardson there, they needed another defenseman on the back burner more than a forward.

If Kylington is going to be out a while, they should definitely waive Ritchie and bring Ruzicka back up though.

Oh, OK. I thought the waiver was immediately got him off the NHL roster even though there’s a 24 hours window for him to be in Stockton during which he can be claimed.

I think Richardson gets waived before Ritchie.

Yeah the 24 hr deal is to allow the other clubs to make a claim or not.

No one would grab him but then the Flames would have gone into warm up with only 6 dmen. If someone gets hurt they start and finish the game with 5. Not optimal against what one assumes is an angry and hungry Avs team.

Doubtful.

Richardson is more versatile than Ritchie including able to play C.

Richardsons only played 7 games since Jan 1st. Ritchies played 22. I think it's pretty clear who Sutter prefers.
I think it's a moot point anyway, unless they bring in another forward before the deadline.

No it’s to balance available d and forwards

The only problem from where I sit is you are taking out a forward that was contributing(top9) in order to ensure there is an extra d that will likely be in popcorn row

Too bad for 63 he was the only one who could pass right down but it is what it is

I think It's for insurance on the back-end, nothing to do with money.

They confirmed in the pregame that Dube moves to centre on the Mangiapane-Toffoli line. Ritchie comes in on the 4th line.

I can’t wait to see the possession bonanza from the likes of Lucic-Monahan-Ritchie! Yikes!

It is not to save money.

Ruzicka going down saves $4,000 per day

It's most likely to maintain as much cap space as possible for the trade deadline

The Flames are already at the max of 23 roster players and they are carrying 7D, including Kylington. Unless Kylington is assigned to IR, someone needed to go down to make space for another dman (Mackey).

Unfortunately, that had to be Ruzicka because of his waiver exemption.

If Mackey draws in on the Tuesday game, I'm very interested to see how comfortable he looks playing next to Tanev. Goes a long way to stopping the "depth defenseman Tre deadline" trade.

More likely Stone stays in the lineup.

Mackey's been called up before, only to putt around on the taxi squad.

Next two games are at home against the Devils and Sabres - pretty good opportunity to give Mackey his first game

Obviously we don't really know any details beyond 'lower body', but IMO it's fair to wonder about sending OK to MIN and maybe the MTL game, too.

They had several days then to manage waivers or whatever (maybe even get Stone/Mackey a practice in that slot). Feeling less than 90% and/or general fatigue makes a further injury more likely.

OK is already just 6 games shy of his career high for gp...hopefully we have another 45+ games left to play. IMO its was a missed opportunity to manage the roster proactively instead of reactively.

Sutter said OK was fine at a full practice on Friday.

He came in the building Saturday and learned Kylington couldn't go.

Not sure why the team would have been waiving guys in that scenario.

I'm talking about between the MIN games - after OK's scary crash. It's total butterfly effect speculation on my part.

Presuming OK was at ~90% health (as would be most NHLers at this point int he season with bumps and bruises) before MIN game 1...maybe he's only been 85% since that hit (ie. a very subtle change that is barely noticeable most of the time). But maybe it's just enough that on a certain play you are out of position by a few inches and do something weird and get hurt.

Whereas if he skipped that MIN trip, maybe he's back to 89% or 92% by the time he's on the ice again. Maybe that's enough to prevent this little injury, maybe it isn't. Obviously these % are video-gamey way to express a complex thing called the human body, but pro sports actually do come down to millisecond and centimetre differences all the time.

Does Mackey get paper transacted down to the minors, now that we have a couple of days off?
