Isn't the difference that she was being paid to give her opinions and that kind of thing? Natasha (I don't know her, but it's easier!), isn't going to be giving her views on the Flames in this role. It's not the same thing at all.

Remember she moved to Calgary prior to getting this job for several reasons and water was just one. Deep down she knows that Edmonton is no good and getting a job with the Flames is a good excuse to tell her Edmonton family that she has to start cheering for the Flames because of her occupation.

I would rather not have a phony deep down Oiler fan working for the Flames ... she looks great but really .. it gives me a bad taste in my mouth.. covering the Flames and secretly cheering for the Oilers ... I'm sure she is a wonderful human being but ... no ... this is wrong .. she can live where ever she wants but stay the hell away from the Stamps and Flames ... this is cringe worthy IMO..

I look at it as a rescue. Welcome to the good side (even if we do have Vladar).

Appreciate the sentiment but this isn’t some glorified fan girl putting on a Flames hat. She’s a professional television reporter/broadcaster and her CV speaks for itself — a decade at TSN and 15 years overall. I’m sure she’ll be just fine in this role.

There are a lot worse things to “cringe” over — just my opinion of course.

PS sad to see Alanna Nolan move on; thought she did a good job in her own right.

Yep, but the lady has to reach out to the gentleman first.

Also, I love this hire!

100% this. Fandom of the team you cover is not a prerequisite for sports journalism or even a team-owned broadcast. This is an experienced broadcaster coming back to Alberta where she grew up and trained. What's not to like?

All that should really matter is whether she does a good job or not. I seem to recall her work at TSN was pretty good.

And with respect to her Oilers social media posts, so what? She was an anchor at TSN at the time, and not covering a team as a beat reporter. Is anyone upset when Jermain Franklin posts pro-Flames stuff now that he’s not on the Flames beat?

Haha! It is. I had never heard of Alanna Nolan before this thread and clearly haven’t watched Flames TV content, but I hate unfair criticisms of people who are paid to do a job, and do it professionally. And the idea that only homers should cover a team or do play-by-play drives me crazy. If all you want are pro-Flames perspectives, turn down the TV volume and stick to CP. Or create a Twitter list of only Flames fans.

Sure show me pictures of Jermaine in his Flames onesie. Nice false equivalency, she never covered the Oilers, if she did it could be construed as a similar situation to Jermaine posting about the Flames.

Derek Wills grew up an Oilers fan, but he's a professional so he never went on social media broadcasting his fandom because he realizes it isn’t professional and limits his employment options.

When it’s a job, you stop being a fan of a team, you cheer for the sport and the players, because… it’s the job you chose. Some people can remain fans and professionally park their fandom. Job #1 is avoiding social media.

When this doesn’t happen it makes professionals look like the clowning jokers in the Edmonton media.

Obviously the Flames are willing to overlook this, but going from TSN to hosting Flames TV is not a promotion.

I've never heard her speak and thought… “hmmm… that is a good question or interesting observation.”, I also doubt that I ever will.

I think you missed the point. Jermain didn’t post pro-Flames stuff until after he stopped covering the team daily. If he did that before, he’d lose credibility as a reporter. But he’s an anchor now and clearly TSN is fine with their talent showing that they are fans too.
I would expect it would be the same with Natasha. Now that she’s covering a team—and paid by that team—it wouldn’t be acceptable to post pro-Oilers stuff.
I fully agree with the take that if it’s your job, stop being a fan of the team you cover. Even if Derek Wills didn’t grow up a Flames fan, he’s clearly invested in their success now. And it comes across as homerism, which is why I can’t listen to him.

Fair enough, then you probably will be disappointed with her work because in all likelihood she’ll follow the Will’s schtick of try-too-hard to seem unbiased propaganda.

My point is, if she’s an Oiler/Canuck/Ducks/Flames/Whatever fan… great, but it is literally the last thing I want to know about someone in that industry.

I'm sitting here laughing at how many people seem sooooo rattled by this hire.

Thanks for the free reading entertainment
