They would be hoping to get multiple good players for him. Maybe get another Chychrun plus.

I think trading Monahan at this point would really hurt the locker room. If we add anyone it will most definitely be paid for with futures, not roster players.
Creating depth is the priority and Sutter is absolutely in BT's ear about what he feels HE needs to make a run.

Probably assume that they are more than 3 years out from competing so why have a great player on a sweetheart contract when the team will suck for that time period? Coyotes are ready to compete and Chychrun is a $9.5M player.
Makes sense to me they will trade him for a heavy futures package with assets cost controlled for more years.

Also if the Flames move Monahan they need to get a rental back for him as they need to free up the space to use on the Gaudreau and Tkachuk extensions.
The Flames simply cannot afford another high priced player with term unless they are moving on from 1 or more of their high end free agents this summer. I would hate to lose 25 year old Tkachuk because we acquired 2 30 something wingers in Toffoli and Nelson
|
This all makes sense. That said, the deal could work because it would be easy to offload Nelson (and Toffoli if need be) in the offseason. Doing so would help recoup the cost of acquisition. That leave more room to sign Johnny and Chucky and would ship out one of the Flames less desirable contracts.
Also doesn't Nelson. Paly centre? NHL.com has him listed as one. If he is a winger, then forget it.

I'm just not certain how he could effectively fit into the current Flames team. He's a long way off from a solid 2nd line centre with a decent 200 foot game. He's more the triggerman who needs a very good winger to set him up.
|
Strome is the only forward on the Blackhawks with a positive GF% at 5v5, 51%, compare that to Monahan's 36.9%. Strome also only has 13 giveaways compared to 34 takeaways. Now I know that that giveaways and takeaways are a subjective stat but I can only go with the info we are given. I just don't think he has poor defensively as he is made out to be.
Not saying he is a perfect trade target but he is an upgrade over Monahan, and is further along than Ruzicka.

They could get the same or better return in 2-3 years. It’s nonsensical to trade him.

The only instance where moving Monahan makes sense is to clear cap for a contract coming the other way. I get the sense that Monahan will be traded in the off season for that reason.

Monahan wears a letter and by all reports he is well liked. Not everyone may have loved his response to Stamkos at the end of the game. The guys on the ice certainly didn't involve themselves.

A little off topic but I can’t believe how good Gudbranson became. Major crow for me on that one.

Monahan was mugged, and lost his footing before he could even shed his gloves. When it was clear that it was Stamkos trying to punch him, I think both teams were wondering what the hell he was thinking. No one stepped in because it's assumed Stamkos would get a one game suspension for throwing punches with less than five minutes to play. The refs screwed up that call. I don't think that this is a Muzzin-Tkachuk situation, and Monahan is fine.
I remember an article a year or two back that talked about the team dynamics off the ice, and more than one player indicated that Monahan is glue guy, and one of the nicest guys in the room. The way that he has handled his demotion this year shows that he is a 'pros pro' and is integral in keeping the team a cohesive unit.
None of that shows up as points on the board, but I could see it being an important part of a long playoff run. I don't think he moves until the off-season, and when he does go he will be missed.

claude giroux is the only player I am interested in. That said, I would hate to know the cost. a 1st + has to be the starting price no?

I hope that we never trade or off load Monahan. He is your great example of a Pros Pro. When Tre talks about character, Monahan is the epitome of that word! Like some people say here, he’s well liked in and out off the rink. I know it’s asset management thing that we have to do, but part of it is he’s an asset for this team whether we like it or not! He might not be showing up on the scoreboard lately, but he gave us lots the past few years. We have never heard him complain and played through significant injuries in that past! For me , he is a true warrior willing to get hit day in and day out for the team and that’s good enough for me!

yeah it was a weird situation really - of course with the initial Monahan hit there was a scrum (the Flames had all of the big dogs on the ice) and folks came to Monahan's side. Bolts took the only PP
then the Flames were on a PP where a totally random jumping of Stamkos on Monahan occured- late in the game I think everyone was surprised- definitely no real response on behalf of the Flames but it was a bizarre situation and risky re: timing and discipline if someone randomly engaged
then it's a 5 on 3- Flames throw or keep their big dogs out , but Tampa basically throws out the 3 biggest /expendable guys they have left- there was no point in escalating by then really

Yes, they would have signed him for sure, if not for the expansion draft.
And it wouldn't have required 6 X 6 - he wanted to stay.

Vancouver offered Markstrom a long term deal...they wouldn't give him the no move because of the expansion draft

Poach a young center from NJ. They have bodies they're willing to move. And IMO, there's a fit there. McLeod and Zacha git the bill perfectly.
I've been on those two being Flames targets for a few years. Still think they make all sorts of sense.

The thing that makes his trade value so high is the years left on a reasonable deal.
You wait until he’s a year from UFA and his value will be quite a bit less than it is know.

Saying someone is an upgrade over Monny isn’t a high standard these days.
Strome is only effective on Chicago when he plays with Kane. He’s actually been a healthy scratch at times when he isn’t playing with Kane.

Intrigued to see what Kubalik costs.
He was great in 19-20, still good in 20-21, but has been bad this year. Both from a counting stats and underlying perspective. Think he could be a shrewd pickup.
