If all else is equal would you rather have Gio back or Chairot?

Correlation does not equal causation. Anyone saying this D Corp is better because Gio is gone is providing an incredibly lazy analysis. This team is better because Sutter had 30 games with them last year and a full training camp this year to instill his system, expectations, and style of play.

I am not big on spending prime assets for a Dman when this team is clearly struggling up the middle. Getting a depth blueliner for cheap would be fine but any more prime assets should be used on improving the bottom 6 or in a dream world second line C.

If we could get Gio back I would welcome him with open arms. This team is poised for a run and I would love Gio to be part of it. The unfortunate part is the team doesn’t have the cap or assets to make it work. I do disagree with anyone who thinks Gio being gone is the reason this team is elite defensively. They would have been either way

"if it ain't broke, don't fix it" during the season.

But in the playoffs, it's totally different. I see our LDs is weaker than RDs.
About Gio, he can play PK and PP, can shoot, and more physical but slower than Kylington. If we play against Edmonton Kylington will be good, but against other bigger meaner teams we need Gio.

But I can understand to keep current chemistry of the team and also we can't fit Gio here.

Vegas may be in the market for a goalie.

When you look back at the Seattle expansion draft less than a year later I would argue no team benefited more from the results than the Flames for the following reasons:

1- the looming expansion draft forced the Canucks to make a decision on their goaltending sooner than they likely would have wanted. If the Seattle draft wasn’t on the horizon the Canucks could have signed Markstrom and made a decision in a year who they wanted to move forward with. With Markstrom requiring the NMC the Canucks had to make a call so they stuck with Demko and allowed Markstrom to walk to free agency right into the Flames hands. Markstrom is the best goalie on the Flames since Kipper and is a huge reason they are a legit contender today

2- Selecting Gio. While losing the captain and one of the all time franchise greats hurt the fallout of this selection helped the Flames with 3 key areas:

3- Kylington breakout. This is the first and most obvious positive result from Gio moving on. There was an opportunity available to 3 Dmen to grab it (Kylington, Valimaki, Zadorov) and Kylington (who was waived the year before and exposed to Seattle) stepped up huge. Flames have 3 of their top 4 D from the 2015 draft class all around 25 years old now.

4- cap space created. Gio leaving freed up 6.75M in cap and adding that with a few of the minimum on tracks that were allowed to walk the Flames were able to spend the money on Coleman, Zadorov, and Gubbransen who have all been keys to transforming the identity of this team into one that is extremely physical and hard to play against. Coleman adds Cup winning pedigree and leadership filling a need in the top 6. Our 500lb third pair is likely the best bottom pairing in the league and will be huge come playoff time.

Yeah it is funny that we looked like the expansion losers before the draft and it all worked out

I will disagree on Markstrom though - Van wasn't giving him a new 6 year deal with Demko waiting to take over either way.

Leafs apparently looking to get out from Mrazek's deal so there might be something they can do with Vegas? Then the Leafs try to woo Fleury?

Stars align for Vegas again, if Smith can be added to the LTIR up to the playoffs.

There was a rumor he was looking at a 5x5 deal to stay in Van

Oh how lucky they are to be hanging on by the skin of their teeth…

I can't justify adding Gio at all. It would require signficant cap out, likely at forward where we can't really afford to be any thinner. I can't see him positively replacing any of the current LD on any pair:
- Hanifin has been a better two way player than Gio this year, his skating alone puts him above
- Kylington is our top scoring dman and one of the best in the league. the team relies on his vision and creation on the back end, and again skating.
- Zadorov is not as good as gio but brings a huge size, hitting, and intimidation element every night that gio only scratched on occasion.

It's not happening, it shouldn't happen. Sorry Gio, great guy, good member of the flames forever, but it's in the past now.

exactly. His return would also make for unnecessary noise and headlines IMO. The pairings have worked well all season, there's really no need to shake it up.

We need centers more than we need defense. In an ideal world we would get Hertl, but that seems unlikely.

Getzlaf would be an amazing get, but I have a hard time believing he would leave Anaheim.

Stastny is a guy who makes a lot of sense, veteran, who can play in all situations, and can still drive play.

Strome would be interesting, not a great skater, but he is skilled and smart enough to make up for it. Can Sutter mold him and make him a solid 2nd line center?

Jarnkrok would fit nicely as he is basically a Swiss army knife.

Copp is a guy who would fit this roster pretty perfectly, the acquisition cost is probably pretty high.

If we do go after a defenseman Hampus Lindholm is the guy we should go all in for. He is far and away the best available defenseman.

The moment you add Gio, players like Kylington and Zadorov start gripping their sticks more trying to do more because they know the writing is on the wall that one or both (on a rotating basis) of them is going to be the odd man out. I just don't think it would be a good add considering the positive vibe around the team and in the locker room right now.

I have no issues with the team bringing back Gio in the offseason to replace Zadorov but I think Treliving would be wise not to alter the chemistry of the team so close to the playoffs.

I haven't heard squat about the NYI retooling but they must want to make a few changes, no? I can't see them moving their young guys, but surely they could clean up if they traded Brock Nelson? 30, three years left, 6mil cap hit. Defensively sound, some offense.

Something, something Monahan or Lucic plus picks and magic beans. I'm dreaming.

The Flames won’t be trading Lucic before the playoffs I think they view him as a key veteran who Sutter can lean on.

Also if the Flames move Monahan they need to get a rental back for him as they need to free up the space to use on the Gaudreau and Tkachuk extensions.

The Flames simply cannot afford another high priced player with term unless they are moving on from 1 or more of their high end free agents this summer. I would hate to lose 25 year old Tkachuk because we acquired 2 30 something wingers in Toffoli and Nelson

Can someone please explain to me why Arizona's trying to deal chychrun??? Young kid, signed on a great deal, long enough to be a key peice to any turnaround. It doesn't make sense to me. It's like they want to maximize the young assets they could get for chychrun, hoping that they land another chychrun...

Strome is only effectively playing in Chicago when Kane is stapled to him. And even then, the line is poor defensively. When Kane gets him the puck in close, he can certainly score. He's not that different to what Monny was before his injuries. He does have skills.

I'm just not certain how he could effectively fit into the current Flames team. He's a long way off from a solid 2nd line centre with a decent 200 foot game. He's more the triggerman who needs a very good winger to set him up.
