Yeah, it tends to destroy a half season fairly often.

ETA: They might have to keep Klingberg just to have a roster. But they might be more willing to part with a forward. Too bad Hintz has a year left.

Commodore was acquired the year before the playoff run.

I kind of think of Valimaki and Mackey as this year's Montador and Commodore if needed. That 2004 team did not load up on defensemen at the deadline, they relied on who was in the system. They drastically improved their forward depth though.

I like that template.

He wasn't way better than Gaudreau it was a bad take then and looks even worse now.

Gaudreau 568 points in 576 Games
Couturier 460 points in 721 Games

Not the same, more or less...its a lot less in fact
But Couturier played the role of shut down centre for his first 6 seasons in the NHL. So comparing points at that time was not apples to apples. Plus he was playing in the NHL as a 19 year old.

Once he got his PP time elevated his scoring was much closer to Johnny’s range. Add in the complete centre aspect, and was at that time considered a more valuable player.

you said scoring was more or less the same...it wasn't
He had a couple career years with 76 points

and it was said he was waaaaaay better not even just a little bit. Anyway, laughable to me at the time and even more so now.

Gaudreau is one of the best players in the NHL this season at both ends of the ice. 74 points and +43 after only 56 games.

All true. But Sutter said his one regret after those POs was not having enough D depth.

I agree this year has changed things.

But before then, in the say 3 years before then, Couturier would have been considered the better player.

And his career years as you called them were a function of different usage. He was now getting the opportunity to play on a scoring line.

Darryl Sutter says the last time the Flames played the Lightning, the only centre who showed up was Lindholm. He has said centre is the most important non-goalie/skater position. I think he will push management to get a centre.

I really hate high priced rentals but boy would Hertl ever fit that bill.

Leafs desparately need a goalie, and Spezza has had a pretty good year. Any chance they would trade Spezza + a future for Vladar?

I know, Anders Erikson is more of a cautionary tale of what happens when you don't have injury replacements available. God he was the worst.

What if the Flames could swing a deal with NJ for Pavel Zacha. Has a 2.5 cap hit, is a UFA after this season, some scoring touch, 24. If anyone can round out his game, it's Sutter.

He'd be a great pick up, but it'd also be a hefty price tag.

He signs annually at league minimum to play in Toronto, they aren't trading him.

Also, why would we trade our backup for a rental?

Spezza could be the guy that stabilizes the #3C/#4C situation here. Wolf could back up Markstrom.

Again, they aren't trading him. The ONLY reason he still plays is to play for the Leafs

And no, they aren't going into the playoffs with a 20 year old AHL rookie as thier backup

I think the team would rather have Wolf have a long run in the AHL playoffs
