He likely indicated to them that he doesn't plan on signing with them.
It looks like Boston College's season could end as early as tonight. They're in the HockeyEast playoffs and need to win 4 games over the next two weekends in order to stay alive. Any loss will end their season.

Will not be surprised to see some of these pending UFA's extend before the deadline with their current teams.

Don't worry Gio, someone will get you on a playoff bound roster soon.

Frank Serivali confirmed what I heard in the past. Gio cannot be traded to the Flames from Seattle with salary retained.

That's a bit of a stupid rule.
Not like the Flames traded him to Seattle with the intent for them to then trade him back with salary retained, he was selected in an expansion draft.
I don't think he will be the Flames target anyways though.

Good. Hope he doesn't return. That ship has sailed.

Frank also thinking Gio is in the 2nd round pick territory value wise
I do wonder if the Flames can circumvent this rule by having a third team retain the salary for them?

That's actually the reason for the rule – so no one would do that with intent. Otherwise there could be a lot of nudge-nudge-wink-wink deals leading up to the expansion draft.
The cap system is rickety enough without allowing rich clubs to buy cap space from an expansion team.

I hope not. If they trade for Gio somehow it will be Kylington sitting in the press box come playoff time. Kylington needs the playoff experience. That said I won’t be surprised if Gio signs back with flames in summer .

Well if he's not a fan of Tkachuk he won't be, and shouldn't be.

Maybe they can take Monahan instead
Obviously the Flames have to add a good pick or prospect

If they both agree to a contract termination, why not?
Makes sense, according to cap friendly it looks like he collected 6 million from bonuses and only two million for his salary for the year.

I’m pretty sure it’s against the rules. Otherwise players could agree to a front load contract (as much as possible within the present rules), and then retire half way through, by agreement with the team.
And in this case it wouldn’t even be a retirement.
ETA: Looks like it can be done but the player has to clear unconditional waivers.

All I can get

Question: If the Flames are looking for a 7/8/9th defenseman, why not pick one up off waivers instead of trading for one? Then send an extra forward like Ritchie down?

Probably because they want a defenceman better than Olli Juolevi or Pedro Lindbohm.
