You think Markstrom stops that Ovechkin shot? Lol
The guy had very few easy, save percentage padding shots
|
Lol yourself, I said the 3rd goal...Ovechkin was the 2nd goal.
Vladar was way too deep in the net. Markstrom is the starter for a reason, there is no way to know for sure but he likely makes another save or two.
You have a thing for backups and said Markstrom isn't a difference maker so I will take your goaltending takes with a grain of salt.
Turnovers and goaltending was the difference, ask Darryl

Flames win this game 66% of the time according to moneypucks "deserve-to-win-o-meter" simulator.
A large amount of their losses this season have been like that

I only watched the first period and then highlights this morning, but felt like one of those games where every turnover ended up in the back of the net and when we needed a big save there wasn't one.
Agreed with the poster that said it seems like the book is out on Vladar, I watched his last game and the commentators kept talking "high glove" as well. Hopefully Vladar gets that figured out.

high glove is "the book" on virtually every goalie in the league. That's why guys like Backlund always miss the net.

The team has been playing good for a while so you have to be careful not to overreact after a loss or two. However the decline of Lucic and Monahan in 2022 has been noticeable and a little concerning. This game was at hand at 2-0 and that Lucic play where he did a pirouette while carelessly throwing the puck right up the slot was comical and the next shift for that line Monahan gets his pocket picked by Ovechkin and after that it was game on for the Capitals.
I'm not sure if Lucic is nursing an injury or running out of gas but he's starting to look like he did in his last season with the Oilers where the puck was like a grenade on his stick and I'm not sure it's wise to place him on the same line as Monahan who seems to have the effect of making his wingers worse.

Yeah, but do you ruin 2 lines or just 1.
Its the problem when you have 2 players not exactly suited for 4th line duties who are a massive liability playing with each other.

With the condensed schedule and back-to-back games, I hope Sutter looks at icing some fresh legs next time. Unfortunately, old and/or broken bodies likely manage the worst for that kind of workload; swapping Richardson and Ritchie for Monahan and Lucic might be seen as less a "demotion" and more like "load management". I'm not sure Sutter would subscribe to that theory though...

Likely won't be seeing Monahan next game. Some really cringe moments last night. Sutter doesn't normally shorten the bench like that.

If that was the case, then Nurse for the Oilers wouldn't be playing their next game either. Players have bad games, and with this condensed schedule, you need all the fresh bodies you can get.
Also I am betting JG is out day to day with a LBI. If from anything a charlie horse.

I'd like to see Phillips up here and see if we can put out a 4th line of
Lucic Dube Phillips
(Monahan sits)
I guess we would need to send Richardson or Ritchie down for this to happen though, and I don't see Sutter being on board with that.

I'm probably answering my own question here, but is the league looking at Wilson taking out Gaudreau's knee?
You can see in the video he cuts back to his left to ensure contact and then lifts his left foot just in time to ensure he doesn't hurt his own knee. What a POS.

Playing like garbage on the 4th line means something entirely different than playing like garbage on the 1st line, normally speaking.

Not upset about the loss, but even Darryl said it last night. Their depth was better than ours.
The Flames need to add an effective bottom 6 forward at the deadline. Not a Ritchie type. Somebody who has actual strong defensive metrics and can actually play a role to frustrate the opposition. Monahan/Lucic are getting dummied against awful competition. When our top line is thriving against the other team's best, this really should make it easier for our bottom 6. But they aren't taking advantage.
I don't really get the noise in the media about the Flames chasing another defenceman. It would be fine, but only for insurance if somebody goes down. I don't see the need to force somebody like Kylington down the lineup.
Another defenceman is a nice luxury to have, but my need right now is a bottom 6 forward.

I agree on the defencemen part of it. We have Michael Stone just sitting there, and plenty of capable AHL defencemen that can take a small role. You only have to look to 2019 playoffs where some guy named Cale Makar came in played extremely well against the Flames.

Team was gassed, so prone to mistakes. Appreciated their never quit attitude.
Also very cool to see Ovechkin tie for 3rd in scoring live. Lots of Ovi fans at the dome. A fan sitting close to our seats, got quite emotional too when Ovi scored the ENG with the opportunity to see this milestone live. Love to see the passion in the game, even though it ended up leading to a Flames loss.

I thought the team gave a gritty effort in a very, very challenging game against a strong team with an awful schedule.
The result was almost a hugely surprising win, so that's really great. Meh, we lost in the end. The thing I am most concerned about is ensuring Johnny is ok.
I get the temptation to #### on certain roster players. I do. But think about it a little bit. If the people who are supposed to be the ones cheering you on, giving you energy and inspiration are always just kicking you every chance they get, do you feel inspired to perform better?
I have a 2.5 year old son. He likes the show called We Bare Bears. We generally watch an episode after dinner. Last night's episode was a perfect example: the grizzly bear goes to be a cheerleader for this girl guides troop's kickball game. They get crushed every year by this team. Anyways, his energy and positivity spark something in the team and they end up ahead by 4 runs in the last inning. A player gets injured and the bear has to sub in or the team forfeits. Here's the thing: the bear is terrible at kickball. Awful. His sub in results in the other team ahead by a point. Now bottom of the inning, 2 outs, the bear is up to kick. The teammates are all down on him and not even meeting his gaze, so he's disheartened and clearly about to strike out- ending the game in defeat.
The girl guide leader gives an impassioned speech about motivation. About team support. About energy. The kids realize that motivation can be effected by the energy those around you direct towards you, and that this motivation can dramatically change the outcome of split second events (like sports!) Sure enough, they all start to cheer, breaking out into a cheerleading squad like maneuver. The bear is inspired, and launches the ball into the stands, homerun, the good scouts win.
So, does anyone here think they can learn something from this children's show?

Sutter won't do it but it's time to give Pelletier or Phillips (maybe both) a look.
Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk
Mangiapane-Ruzicka-Toffoli
Pelletier-Backlund-Coleman
Lucic-Dube-Lewis
Monahan can sit for a couple games IMO. He had stretches at times where he looked okay earlier this year when playing with Dube or Mangiapane, but he's a liability when asked to play with Lucic/Lewis.
