The Capitals are below .500 since the calendar flipped to 2022 — 10-12-2 to be exact — and have tumbled to the final wildcard slot in the Eastern Conference. They have a sizable cushion on the ninth-place Columbus Blue Jackets, but they’ll likely be staring down a doozy of a first-round matchup.
For Washington, Tuesday's game marks a significant milestone in the franchise's history, and in the careers of two of its cornerstone players. Caps captain Alex Ovechkin and alternate captain Nicklas Backstrom will suit up and take the ice together for the 1,000th time as NHL teammates. They'll become just the ninth set of NHL teammates to play a thousand games together.
The Capitals are coming off a 5-2 victory over the Seattle Kraken on Saturday, and are winners of two straight after knocking off the East-leading Carolina Hurricanes 4-0, 48 hours earlier.
Conor Sheary tallied a pair, including the game-winning powerplay strike midway through the second period. Tom Wilson, Dmitry Orlov and Alex Ovechkin rounded out the offence, while Vitek Vanecek made 29 saves.
"There were parts that were good tonight, and parts that I thought we needed to be a little bit better, if I'm being honest," Caps Head Coach Peter Laviolette told Mike Vogel of WashingtonCapitals.com. "They came out really hard. They competed really hard in the first and they work, so you've got to compete at that level.
Tough game after 2 big wins. Third game in four nights. 3-1 Washington, hope I'm wrong! I've been wrong about this team a lot this season. Darryl just hits different!
What a brutal schedule with the 5 in 7. A win here would be huge. Flames need to win the games against the non playoff teams and they did that with the Oilers and hopefully will do the same with the Wings. I feel the Lightning and Avs are going to be really tough but tonight is a bit of a toss up. I think it is an OT game with a coin flip on who wins
Definitely not expecting a W tonight. But man if they do get the 2 points that's a huge accomplishment. Huge barometer game against the Avs, a BoA win and then a hungry OV and Caps team rolling 24 hours later? Quite the psychological grind in 4 days.

It'll take the fellas a bit to find their legs but one thing could be worse....if Pissy and McD had have played hard yesterday our top players would likely be a little tired today but i think they'll be fine.
Agreed though.....what a wack schedule.
Regardless. Quick turn here to show were ready to go.
This is why rolling 4 lines and having the ability to have a roster where you can don that is so important.
Need to be wary of Wilson and Hathaway. Both have been getting away with allot of borderline hits . Wondering how many fireworks will occur tonite as I expect it to be a chippy, entertaining but butt clenching affair.
I have no idea what to expect anymore. On paper its a tough game for a tired team, but tbh this is just the start of the grind-week, so hopefully they rise to the occasion.
Last game against the Caps was a doozy. Blew a three goal lead only for Lindholm's hat trick goal to win it in OT. Hopefully the team remembers and doesn't take the foot off the gas in this one.

I havent seen this club not give effort this season, simply because Sutter won't allow it to happen, but in this case im not sure there is much gas left in the tank that flooring the pedal will do.
But...this club has also surprised and been ridiculously resilient all year so who knows.
Vladar (im assuming) might have to steal this one.

That was Lindy’s best goal of the year and there’ve been a bunch. Outmuscled Carlson and just goes in for the score.
If Darryl is worried about team fatigue, then I am. Just hoping for a good effort and whatever happens, so be it. I would be thrilled with a point, delirious with two. Go Flames Go!
