More from the now infamous (and humiliating convoy for Putin) as there were questions on when Ukraine would take advantage of their position. At the same time we didn't get much drone footage of late.

It just got Bayraktar'd!

Yeah, it's crazy seeing videos of handheld infrared-guided weapons reliably taking out tanks and aircraft. One person and a Javelin or Stinger can easily take out a $3M tank or helicopter.

And even the cruder weapons are insane in their capability and how they remove some of the advantages of tanks/APCs. I saw a video of a few Ukrainian soldiers taking out part of a convoy with a Ukrainian-designed anti-tank guided missile system. Basically the people controlling it were in a forest with a laptop-type controller, well away from the road. They were picking off vehicles with guided missiles, all controlled by the laptop. They were in and out in about 2-3 minutes and took out a whole section of the convoy. Basically guerilla war tactics but done somewhat remotely.

Not to mention the Turkish drones they're using.

There was a picture from a couple days into the war with that Ukrainian system you're describing, the data was all in Arabic and they still managed to kill a tank on a bridge. Manufacturer replied to the tweet with instructions how to switch the language on start up. Insanely easy to use I guess.

What is the point of even sending in tanks?

and i'm assuming the drones from the Turks aren't top of the line are they? and they are still doing a crap load of damage.

I'm sure the US has even better ones right?

So at the end of all this, is Russia's military basically kaput? Puts them at a great spot lol, need an updated comparison graph of NATO v Russia after this.

This is apparently one of the Bibles on Russia's approach to Warfare.

A long read.

If they're used properly with proper support and logistics, they're still very good at what they do. But in places where they're not getting that, they start to lose their advantage when faced with handheld anti-tank weapons.

No, they're not even close to top of the line. The Turkish drones Ukraine is using have something like 1/15th the range of US drones, can't fly as high, and aren't nearly as damaging. But they're extremely cheap in comparison and are still capable of inflicting a lot of damage in situations like we're seeing in Ukraine.

I read an article a couple months ago on the future of military tech and doctrine, and it argued that with the increasing effectiveness of these kinds of small guided weapons and drones, investments in tanks and conventional artillery is an enormous waste of resources. Basically, good battlefield intelligence + guided weapons are rendering much conventional hardware if not obsolete, then incredibly uneconomical.

That good, reading about the two top leaders (Gerasimov and Shoigu), if I had to bet on one of them to stand up to Putin, it would have been the former. Shoigu and Putin are apparently like soul bonded best buds. Gerasimov while definitely a dangerous man, seems like the type that is country-first over any single person, while Shoigu is loyal to Putin above all else. Just from what I read about them, in actuality, neither would likely stand-up to Putin I guess.

Just so there's no confusion, different Gerasimov got killed today, his nephew.

Vitaly, the one just killed was in command of the whole Kharkiv theatre and hailed as the Crimean liberator. That's an insanely high blow.

If anything, it may make Valeriy oppose Putin.

Man backs truck into gates of Russian embassy in Dublin - https://www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2022...84925-embassy/

Russian embassy cries "The incident is cause of extreme concern. We believe that no people of sound mind could support such senseless and barbaric actions." Boo hoo.

I've argued in the past that instead of Canada humming and hawing about spending millions on new jet fighters should just develop an home-grown drone solution to patrol the arctic. It's also a lot less investment in pilot training and support infrastructure. Just strap a bunch of kids who already grew up as twitch streamers to fly the drones.
