I'm not a big "recycle ex-Flames" advocate, but Kulak would make some sense.

Absolutely, I've been confused why reports are focussed on Chariot out of Montreal, when Kulak makes more sense especially cap-wise.
And regarding ^ above, at least we aren't exactly bringing Kulak back to re-live any 'good old days' with the club.

Except it will be just like the “good old days” for kulak because he will be eating more popcorn than not unless there is an injury.

DeKeyser makes $5 million. He's not getting claimed, even if he's a pending UFA.

Don't think Kulak makes sense. Brad originally traded him away because there wouldn't be much opportunity for him here. That's the same situation he'd be coming back to.
Is there someone they're unhappy with, do they want to scratch Gudbranson or Zadorov? That seems unlikely, both have been very serviceable. Or they want a guy who isn't that good so it's ok to sit him, but they already have Stone. Maybe there's undisclosed injuries but everyone in the D core is playing the best hockey of their careers.
So this is a long winded way of saying I still don't understand why the Flames want more D depth.

Is there an injury story to DeKeyser? I thought he was really solid and earned that $5mm salary at the time. What happened?

With all due respect to Stone, there’s no competition for top six D-spots right now, so why not add someone like Kulak? That gives us another proven NHLer in case of injury. And as much as Kylington has improved, sometimes he can be scary to watch.

I think the idea is to have 9 defensemen to carry you through to the finals, in case there's injuries.
I guess Mackey/Valimaki are your "Double Doors" but it wouldn't hurt to have one more.

Kulak is an insurance policy, plain and simple. Our D has been exceptionally healthy this year, and knock on wood they stay that way, but if any of our top6 were to go down for any time, I don't believe management thinks anyone we have on reserve (Valiamki, Stone or Mackey) are capable of stepping in during the playoffs. Kulak would not cost a lot, can be fit under the cap, is UFA at the end of the year and can seamlessly step into a 5/6 role.
It's a no brainer really. Don't know if it's going to be Kulak or not, but we are most definitely going to add a depth defensemen before the deadline.

Heh. Both Dekeyser and Sustr were higher profile college free agent signings that actually went on to become contributing NHL Dmen. Weird to see them circling the drain in their early 30's

Haven't realized Moritz Seider is putting up a stellar season while being stuck with DeKeyser most of the year. Give that kid the Calder for that alone.

Speaking of the Calder...
Who's in the race this year? I had Dawson Mercer in the mix all year but haven't paid enough attention to the other leading candidates.
So as far as I am aware, Mercer is in the hunt but who else?
Edit: wow seems like Detroit has 3 players in the mix with Raymond, Seider and Nedjelkovich. Which is odd isn't it? Can Ned actually be a Calder nom twice in 2 years? Though that was a one and done kind of award.
Then Zegras and Drysdale from ANA.

I think Seider takes it. He's been incredible. 40 points in 56 games, and is +1 on a team that is -40.

Kulak was a 24 year old 7th defenseman when he was traded to Montreal.
He's now a 28 year old 4-6 D-Man.
With Gudbranson, Zadorov and Stone all being UFA this year, and Kylington needing a new contract, it's unlikely Zad comes back with his price tag or that Stone is re-signed to be a #7. Bringing Kulak back in at the deadline for a long playoff run could be a pre-cursor to him re-signing as a Flame for a bottom pair role at half the cost of Zadorov. I wouldn't be against it at all. If Gudbranson walks as well (hopefully not), then atleast we have an experienced D-Man for the 3rd pair to help bring up a Valimaki or Mackey next year.
Hanifin-Andersson
Kulak-Kylington
Valimaki/Mackey-Tanev
Could be better than
Hanifin-Andersson
Kylington-Tanev
Valimaki/Mackey-Kinvall
Likely won't be overly active in Free Agency with the limited cap space, so it could make sense now, unless of course Kulak is looking for a significant raise.

DeKeyser has been plagued by back injuries during that contract. He used to be pretty great. Not so much these days.
