Only trouble is that he makes sense for a lot of teams. He's good, but not worth getting into a bidding war over.

Pagnotta says that the Sabres are taking calls on defensemen Colin Miller, Will Butcher, Mark Pysyk, and of course, Robert Hagg. Miller is an underrated player in need of a rescue out of Buffalo. His cap hit for this year is 3.825M, then he’s UFA this sumner.

There is also the option of finding a third team who is willing to retain half of the retained half to reduce the cap hit even more, like San Jose did with the Foligno trade last year, which would open the door to adding about $6.8 million in cap hit at the deadline. Getting a team to do that will probably cost a mid/late round pick.

Ummmm....no.
But you are correct in that the Flames are not dealing Hanifin for anything at this point, particularly rental players.

Monahan's contract is a big problem for this team, both this year and next, no matter which way you cut it. Jankrok is an instant upgrade at #3C at a much lower cap hit. Getting Monahan's contract off the books would be a big benefit to this team.
Gio can still play at a reasonably high level. He's been playing far better this season than I though he would.
Haydn Fleury would be a depth defenseman for the playoffs.
